Inside Line Promotions – NEWBERRYTOWN, Pa. (April 15, 2014) – Joe Trenca is satisfied with his first weekend out of the shop.
Piloting his sprint car for Mucci Motorsports, Trenca overcame mechanical issues during his season opener on Saturday to record a top 20 with his 360ci engine against 410ci competition on Sunday.
“It started off as a tough weekend, but at the end it was a good weekend,” he said. “We learned a lot.”
The team was plagued on Saturday during the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints season opener at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa.
“We had motor troubles the whole night,” he said. “It was the same thing all night. We changed stuff we probably didn’t need to change. We eliminated things. Sunday morning we took the whole fuel system apart. There was stuff in the filter and stuff in the lines.”
Trenca timed in 17th quickest and finished seventh in his heat race on Saturday after pulling in early because of the fuel issue. After starting on the outside of the 11th row in the main event, Trenca worked toward the top 15 before a red flag around Lap 18.
“The crew came out and told me what I needed to do better,” he said. “I started running the top better and we picked up a few positions. About five laps later it started acting up again so I pulled it in.”
Trenca ended with a 17th-place result.
The team traveled to Susquehanna Speedway Park on Sunday for another test.
“We were the only 360, but we were fast right out of the gate,” he said.
Trenca was in a thick battle with several cars for fifth place most of his heat race.
“Probably fifth through eighth were all in the same pack,” he said. “I was racing with some pretty good guys. I went to throw a slide job on one of the cars and didn’t complete it and lost some momentum that cost me.”
Trenca placed eighth, which started him 22nd in the main event.
“The main event went really well,” he said. “I was racing with a lot of the guys I never thought I would, like Danny Dietrich and Brent Marks. We all kinda battled pretty good the whole race. I stayed up with the pack and passed a few cars.”
Despite having to pull the car out of gear a couple of times to avoid crashes, which sent Trenca to the back for the restart each time, he rallied to post a 16th-place result.
“The objective was to first test the motor,” he said. “Then it was to make some laps and learn a new track. I really like racing down there and I want to go back this year. I had a lot of fun down there. They race with each other really hard and really clean.”
Trenca will return to action on April 25 at Can-Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, N.Y., with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints.
