Engine Issue Halts Covington's Charge at I-30

Covington Motorsports-GLENPOOL, Oklahoma (April 9, 2014) Matt Covington took on the I-30 Speedway last Saturday night to run some laps before the ASCS National race this coming weekend.

Covington powered his way into the top-5 from the 16th starting position
before engine issues sent him to the trailer with just two laps remaining in the feature.

“We had another solid night going for us, but unfortunately it didn’t end the way I would of hoped,” stated Covington, “We came down here to try some stuff and work on the car before the National race this upcoming weekend.”

Matt drew the 3rd starting spot for his heat race to start off the night. The track was very fast and racy come heat race time. Covington was able to race out front with the leaders and work for 2nd but ultimately settle for 3rd in his heat.

“We had a good car in the heat,” Matt said, “The track was just tacky and fast which made it hard to pass anybody once you got to them.”

Without being able to gain any passing points, Matt would have to run the B-main. With the pole starting position, Covington was able to jump out front and walk away with the B-main win.

The B-main finish would give Matt the 16th starting spot for the feature. At the drop of the green Matt would make a charge to the front. Covington would advance into the top-10 after only a handful of laps into the race. With about ten laps to go Matt would crack the top-5 and race into the 5th position. With the leaders bunching up as they worked into heavy lap traffic, Matt would do what he could to pass for 4th. Luck would go south for Covington with two laps to go as his engine expired, halting his run and ending his night.

“It was a bummer way to end the night after what looked to be a very promising run for us,” quoted Covington, This is my first ever engine failure since I started running sprint cars. But on the bright side there was a couple positives gained from tonight, and if we can run this strong next weekend when we come back I think we will be ok.”

Matt and his Covington Motorsports team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, Bob Hurley RV, Eaton Industrial, Maxwell Industries, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2014.
