Scotty Thiel - Podium at Donnellson!

Scotty Thiel - Podium at Donnellson!

Mother nature finally presented some decent weather to go racing in and the Scott Thiel Motorsports team took advantage of that by traveling to Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa this past Saturday night. After starting seventh in the 25 lap A-main event, Scotty Thiel drive his way up to a 2nd place podium finish.

The crew had worked hard on Friday night preparing their new race trailer so they could make the trip on Saturday morning. Final touches were made on Saturday before loading up and making the six hour haul to Donnellson, Iowa. They made the trip last April to Lee County Speedway with the Sprint invader series and pulled off a third place run. Scotty was excited to return back to the track and also get back in the seat. Florida was the last time he was in the car which was back in February.

Pill draw opened and Scotty drew a 20 pill, which set him to start third in the first 10 lap heat race event. The track began to slick off fairly quick as the night went on which made it difficult to pass. At the drop of the green flag, Scotty charged down into turn one and two on the bottom side. He tried to make the bottom work but lost some ground coming off of turn two and fell back into the fourth spot. He regrouped after one lap and worked his way up to the top side of the track. Several laps later, Thiel slid into the third spot and after ten laps would finish in the third spot, missing the transfer to the 6 car, 6 lap, Budweiser Shake-Up Dash event. That finish would place Scotty to start in the seventh position for the nights 25 lap A-Main event.

The cars were pushed off for the nights A-main event. Scotty knew the beginning laps were going to be the toughest as the track was slick from top to bottom. The field took the green and Scotty shot down to the bottom going into one. He made the car stick and charged off of turn two already up to the fourth position. He tried making the bottom work again in turn three and four but didn’t move up any more spots. He used the bottom side again in one and made the pass for third but a red flag came out as a car flipped in turn one. Scotty restarted in the fourth spot and after the restart, worked his way up to the third spot right way out of turn two. Thiel moved up the track to the cushion and had to make up some ground as the leaders had pulled away from the field. Only 8 laps were complete when a caution flew for a car spinning in turn two. On the restart, Scotty tried to make a slide job happen in turn one but came up short and settled back into the third spot. A few laps later, the opportunity presented itself and he began to battle back and forth for the second position. He made the pass for position on lap 14 and began to charge towards the leader. With only five laps to go, Scotty made the ground up on the leader and was within a few car lengths. Lap traffic was spread all over the track and made it tough to gain ground. With three laps to go, Scotty came off of turn two and the car began to sputter. Scotty instantly thought he was running out of fuel and began to back off and hold his position. The white flag flew and the Scotty was shaking the car to get any bit of fuel to come through and managed to hold on to the second place finish. After the race, the crew looked and still had 10 gallons of fuel left in the car. It turned out to be the fuel shut off level on the fuel filter than began to close with three laps to go which cut down the fuel supply to the engine.

““We were o.k. in the beginning, but Russ got out to a big lead,” Scotty said. “Towards the middle
of the race, I found some rubber and we were running him down a little. Late in the race, the car started sputtering a little. I thought I was running out of fuel, so I backed it down to half throttle or so. I was just running my own race. It turned out it was the fuel shut off lever. Overall, the Professional Plating, XXX sprint car was phenomenal tonight. Congratulationsto Russ.”

Scott Thiel Motorsports will be traveling to the Oshkosh Speedzone on April 19th which will be the season opener for the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series and the debut of the STM 410.
