Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (April 7, 2014) – After a challenging start to his weekend, Cole Wood rebounded with a pair of top 15s during the ASCS Midwest Region season-opening doubleheader at I-80 Speedway.
“We weren’t able to start our heat race on Saturday,” Wood said. “The car wouldn’t start. I don’t know if it happened when I shut the car off from hot laps or when I tried to fire off for the heat race, but it never started.”
The team changed the steering assembly prior to the B Main, which Wood started on the outside of the seventh row.
“We got it figured out in the B Main,” he said. “It was kind of a bummer when we couldn’t do our heat race, but I was happy everybody on our team was able to rebound so well.”
Wood rallied from 14th to place fifth and earn a transfer to the main event, which he started 19th.
“It was rubber down so I was happy to pass a bunch of cars,” he said. “Our car was really good at working on the high line. I don’t think I went down on the bottom once.”
Wood picked off position by position and was credited with an 11th-place result.
He returned to I-80 Speedway on Sunday with a boost of confidence. Wood advanced from seventh to fifth place during his heat race, which earned him enough points to lock into the main event.
“I think we were really good at the beginning of the race,” he said after starting 13th. “I had my line figured out, but a couple of guys got by me. Instead of staying with my line I followed them to their line. I think it would have been a better choice to stay up there and run the cushion.”
Wood competed with several drivers just outside the top 10 for the remainder of the race and he ended with a 13th-place finish.
“I was really happy with our first night,” he said. “We learned some things both nights that we will take into this weekend.”
Wood is scheduled to make his debut this Friday at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., and he will also compete on Saturday at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa, with the MOWA series.
