Inside Line Promotions – PARK CITY, Kan. (March 31, 2014) – Cole Wood put together his best performance of the season last Saturday at 81 Speedway.

Wood claimed his heat race during the 4th annual Air Capital Shootout with the NCRA and he recorded his first top five of the season in the main event.

“It was a good weekend for us,” he said. “We started out good. We led the heat race from flag to flag.”

After drawing the pole for his heat race, Wood led the distance to capture the win. That earned him the fourth-most points of any driver and lined him up on the outside of the second row for the 35-lap main event.

“I got up to third and ran third for a while,” he said. “It was rubber down from three laps in. I was pretty nervous. I wouldn’t say tire control is one of my strong points. I was worried I was blowing my tires off faster than everybody else. When we got to the end of the race I knew whoever had the best tires would win the race.”

Wood lost a couple of positions during the middle of the race, which tested Wood’s patience on the rubber-down track. However, he rallied to place fifth and had a good chunk of tread remaining on his tires.

“I was happy that we came in with that much tire,” he said. “There’s a lot of guys that had a lot more experience that had bald tires. If I wasn’t concerned with blowing the tires off, I think I could have got by them. That gives me confidence that I can be more aggressive on that kind of track next time.”

Wood will take his momentum to I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the ASCS Midwest Region season-opening event this Friday and Saturday.
