Wood Shows Improvement During POWRi’s Season-Opening Weekend

Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (March 24, 2014) – Cole Wood overcame a high draw each night last weekend to show noticeable improvement during the Turnpike Challenge with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series at Port City Raceway.

“I think everybody learned a lot,” he said. “I got a lot more comfortable in the car and I think next time will feel better. I think my crew chief learned a couple of things off the car as well.”

Wood kicked off the competition on Saturday by advancing from sixth to fourth place in his heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the second row for a B Main.

“In the B Main I was running third for most of the race and somebody got by me,” he said. “Another guy tried to pass me and drove over my left rear. It ended up spinning us both out. I wasn’t able to transfer to the feature. I hadn’t been on a normal track in a midget in a while so I was pleased with how things were.”

Wood rebounded to place seventh in the consolation race on the opening night.

On Sunday, Wood drew a 72, which started him last in his heat race. After picking up a trio of positions to place fifth, Wood was relegated to a B Main. He then started on the outside of the front row and powered to a third-place finish to earn a transfer to the main event.

Wood opened the 40-lap feature on the inside of the last row and he maneuvered toward the top 10 during the first half of the race.

“We made it up to 10th or 11th and the left rear tire went flat on Lap 25,” he said. “Under yellow we changed the left rear.”

After restarting at the rear of the field, Wood rallied to 13th before ending with a 16th-place finish on the tight track.

His next midget event is slated for April 25 at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill. Wood is scheduled to return to sprint cars this Saturday at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., for the 4th annual Air Capital Shootout with the NCRA.
