Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (March 24, 2014) – The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race at Merced Speedway couldn’t come at a better time for Big Game Motorsports driver Sammy Swindell.
Swindell is undefeated in the three previous World of Outlaws races at the bullring located in Merced, Calif., which hosts an Outlaw race this Friday.
“They are changing the format for this week and it’s going to be different to get in the dash,” he said. “I’m not sure how that’s going to work out for everybody, but it’d be nice to go there and win four in a row. We’re definitely capable of that, but everything has to fall in place like it does for everybody else.”
Swindell and the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series will also compete at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., on Saturday for the Mini Gold Cup.
The two small tracks come after a rough outing for Swindell and his Big Game Treestands team last Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track.
Swindell timed in sixth quickest in qualifying – only seven hundredths of a second out of second place, which would have locked him into the dash with a top-five result in his heat race. Swindell placed fourth in his heat to advance to the feature, which he started 14th.
“Everything was going pretty good until we had a nozzle line come apart,” he said. “It’s something I’ve never had happen in over 40 years that I’ve been racing. It just covered me with fuel. The mufflers get the flames out the back so I didn’t want to catch on fire.”
Swindell, who was running 10th midway through the feature when the line broke, brought out a caution when he slowed going down the frontstretch.
“It sounded really, really rough and it didn’t take a second or two,” he said. “When it blew the line it flipped to where it was blowing into the car. My whole leg and up the right side was covered in fuel. That’s not a good feeling to have.”
As Swindell slowed to a stop at the top of the track in turns one and two, another driver was unable to avoid the Big Game Treestands car.
“They had called the yellow and it seemed like one of the last cars ran into me,” Swindell said. “It was one of the hardest hits I’ve had. I hit the back of the seat so hard I was seeing stars. It ruined our car. It was like dropping from 30 feet. My feet went up under the seat. I’m pretty sore.”
The impact ended Swindell’s night with a 21st-place result. The team is also forced to build a new car prior to this week’s races.
