Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 17, 2014) – The Big Game Motorsports team continues to show improvement as evident by its best performance of the season last Saturday.
Sammy Swindell piloted his Big Game Treestands car to a fourth-place result during the finale of the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series doubleheader at Thunderbowl Raceway.
“We probably had the best balance from the start to the end of the race,” he said. “We were still a little slower than we needed to be at the start.”
The top-five result capped a busy weekend, which started on Friday by Swindell narrowly missing the heat race inversion during qualifying. He timed in 13th – one spot out of the inversion by two hundredths of a second.
“We weren’t exactly right on,” he said. “It put us behind all night. We were in the first heat and then had to wait until the end to run again.”
Swindell finished fifth in his heat race to lock into the 35-lap feature, which he started 13th.
“The car was ok,” he said. “I thought the track was going to be up at the top and most of the race it was at the bottom. We put the wrong gear in for that and had the setup off for how the race track was.”
The Big Game Treestands car competed just outside the top 10 for the entire feature until Swindell was involved in a crash in the final corner on the last lap.
“It was a shame we got crashed in the last corner,” he said. “He spun and kept going to do a 360. I couldn’t get between him and the fence. The track was slick and I ran out of room. It was unfortunate.”
Swindell ended upside down and dropped to a 20th-place result.
“We had a pretty busy day trying to get the car back together for Saturday,” he said. “We spent most of the day trying to repair things and replace things.”
With the race car repaired, the team applied the lessons learned on Friday to the Saturday setup and the car was immediately stronger. Swindell qualified seventh quickest and finished second in his heat race to advance to the dash. He then ended with a fourth-place result, which lined him up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“We were definitely a lot better,” he said. “I didn’t know how rough it was going to be so we left the car a little too loose. I made a little mistake and slipped up and caught a hole and let Logan (Schuchart) get by me.”
After advancing to third place on the first lap, Swindell lost a position to Schuchart during the opening laps. Swindell maintained that position for the remainder of the race and although he was within striking distance, Swindell was unable to pick up another position. He finished fourth, which marked his first top-five result of the season.
“I think that was our best starting spot of the year and our best finish of the year,” he said. “We’re onto some things. We’ve made a lot of changes here lately. It’s all fine-tuning everything to get it just right to beat these guys. There’s always four or five guys that are going to be on, so you’ve got to be dead on to beat them. We’ve got to take what we learned to start more dialed in every night.”
Swindell and the Big Game Treestands team will return to action on Saturday at Stockton 99 Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the FVP Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
“It was a challenging track last year,” he said. “It had a little bit of everything. It’s a nice layout and a nice facility. I’m looking forward to getting there.”
