Inside Line Promotions – TUCSON, Ariz. (March 9, 2014) – Although the opening week of the season didn’t go as expected for Trey Starks, he found a silver lining at the conclusion of the action-packed week.

“I really wish we had races that didn’t count to get some of the stupid stuff out of the way,” he said.

As Starks competed in three races during a four-day span with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, his team chased a mechanical gremlin that hampered his performance.

In what ended up being a mag issue, the team swapped a variety of parts throughout the FVP Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track in Las Vegas last Wednesday and Thursday. Starks qualified 35th and 34th, respectively, and picked up positions in his heat race after starting ninth both nights.

However, he was relegated to the Last Chance Showdown each night and despite rallying from 15th to 10th on Wednesday and from 14th to eighth on Thursday, Starks was unable to capture a transfer to the main event.

The team then ventured to Tucson International Raceway on Saturday, when Starks made his 410ci debut at the fast, 3/8-mile oval. The issue that plagued him in Las Vegas reappeared during hot laps and the team changed the ignition box.

Starks then qualified 23rd quickest.

“It ran clean,” he said. “It just didn’t run strong.”

The team ultimately swapped the mag prior to the heat race, but missed the race while trying to fix the engine timing.

“We replaced the mag, but the timing was off,” he said. “We tried to set the timing and the first three times we tried to time it it was way, way off.”

Once the engine fired, the car was strong and Starks placed fifth in the Last Chance Showdown to transfer to the 25-lap main event.

“We finally figured out everything by the time the main rolled around on Saturday,” he said. “I just wish we figured it earlier. I guess better late than never.”

Fighting wind gusts and a track that was beginning to take rubber, Starks took advantage of what he learned during the Last Chance Showdown.

“Once everything went the way it was supposed to go we were really good,” he said. “It was a really big help running the Last Chance Showdown. I knew it was laying some rubber down and I used that to my advantage in the main. I knew to get to it before a lot of other people. We tightened the car up and had it set up to run the rubber.”

Starks rallied from 21st to 12th before losing a position on the final lap when he got trapped in traffic.

He will return to action on Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
