Tuesdays with TMAC – Heading “Down Under”!

(Bill W) January 14, 2014 – Terry McCarl is excited to get the 2014 campaign underway, and will be leaving Thursday for Australia to get things kicked off. For the second year in a row, he will be driving for Colin Bulmer in Victoria at the President’s Cup at Avalon Raceway and the Sprint Car Classic at Premier Speedway near Warrnambool. Last year, the pair teamed up for a second place finish in the Classic and they hope to climb the ladder one more rung against over one hundred competitors.

The Altoona, Iowa driver is ready to go racing. “We’ll be running the President’s Cup at Avalon and at the Classic again,” says TMAC. “I’m really happy to be back running with my friend Colin Bulmer and Bayaire Industries. We’ll be utilizing A.R.T. chassis and KRE engines again. We’ll also be representing Knoxville Raceway and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum when we are down there.”

The President’s Cup will be run next Wednesday, January 22, while the Classic will run from January 24 to 26 this year. “For those who don’t know, the Sprintcar Classic is the Knoxville Nationals of Australia,” explains TMAC. “It’s one of the biggest events in the world. Last year, there were over one hundred entries and we were able to run second. This year, they are up to 108 or more. They’ve made it into a three-day format and split up the field into two preliminary nights.”

Always the promoter as well as driver, TMAC is impressed with the performance of the team at Premier Speedway. “David Mills and his staff do an incredible job,” he says. “I look at things a little different than most people. I pay attention to promotion and what they do well. They just do a great job. The whole town of Warrnambool is involved, and it makes it a huge event. Last year, they did an unbelievable job of qualifying over one hundred cars and running all of their heats on the preliminary night. It was amazing how they did it. I’d recommend it for anyone in the States who can make it over there.”

The track itself has always suited TMAC well. “It’s a fun racetrack that reminds me of Huset’s Speedway (Brandon, South Dakota),” he says. “Premier Speedway is a little more round. The event itself is a lot like the Knoxville Nationals. There is a lot going on before and after the races, and it’s just a lot of fun. It takes me back to when I was a kid at the Nationals. The two-heat format is fun for the fans and it gives you a chance to race your way back into it if you do have a bad qualifying run.”

Last year, a bad pill didn’t slow the team down. “I drew 97 out of 105 to qualify last year,” says TMAC. “We were around 14th quick. That was incredible. It’s what made me fall in love with the A.R.T. chassis we are running today. It was the first time I had run one. Glen Boune of A.R.T. chassis and I have become friends and he makes a quality piece. Colin certainly has a very nice car, and engine program. I was comfortable every time we went out, and obviously, we did well.”

While focus in the States is on the Chili Bowl this week, TMAC will be jetting to Australia. “I’m leaving Thursday,” he says. “I haven’t missed the Chili Bowl in a long time, but I didn’t have a ride. I’d rather go over there and try to make some money. I just love going to Australia. It’s unfortunate that it will be 100 degrees in Melbourne when I arrive. I hate to leave this awesome weather in Iowa, but…”

Those in Australia can be assured that TMAC will pack his humorous sarcasm with his shorts!

Chili Bowl in TMAC History!

In just his second shot at the Chili Bowl in 2008, TMAC turned a lot of laps in the WilkePAK #11. After finishing third in his B main in the prelim, he finished 17th in the feature. That put him in Saturday’s C, which he won. He then advanced through the pack to third in the B to qualify for the finale. He continued his drive to a 19th place finish.
