Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 6, 2014) – Cody Freeman’s debut at the 29th annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout didn’t go as planned, but that didn’t stop the youngster from having a successful time at the premier micro sprint event last weekend.
Freeman opened his inaugural race at Tulsa Expo Raceway last Thursday by dropping from fifth to seventh place in his heat race of the restricted “A” class, which featured 85 drivers.
“It was our first time ever there and we just missed the setup completely,” Freeman said. “Primarily it was tight and it was overgeared.”
Freeman returned to the track on Saturday, when he lined up 11th in a B Main. Freeman maneuvered to eighth place in the consolation, which only transferred the top-three finishers.
“The car was good,” he said. “There were a lot of really fast race cars. There were a couple of cautions, but for the most part the other drivers were down-right fast. We just got beat.”
Freeman said the experience was invaluable and the team ended the trip on a positive note.
“Even though we didn’t make the A Main, we feel like we accomplished a lot of goals,” he said. “And we can say we showed up with the car in one piece and rolled it in the trailer in one piece.
“The biggest thing that we got to apply toward next season is confidence. Being 11-years-old and showing up there for the first time, I gained confidence knowing I can drive restrictors with kids with a lot more experience.”
The team likely won’t race again for a couple more months. In the meantime, Freeman is reformatting the program.
“We’re starting off with a new chassis and we’re going to modify our motor program,” he said. “Also, we’ve got some meetings lined up with some sponsors. We’d like to travel more and maybe go as far as to California and maybe as far north as Wisconsin.”
