Inside Line Promotions – LUBBOCK, Texas (Dec. 30, 2013) – Sometimes race car drivers learn the most from being out of the seat.

For Graves Motorsports pilot Kolt Walker, a stint on the road as a crew member with a team on the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series led to time with the Champ Car Series and a program-revolutionizing experience.

In 2005, Walker joined the World of Outlaws team that Joey Saldana drove for on the circuit. Walker spent the season soaking up information as the car chief and tire specialist.

“Working alongside Joey I learned a lot, just watching him drive and carrying it over to me being in the seat and how he maneuvered through this or that,” he said. “It helped me in that manner as well as being there talking to him about different situations.”

The following season presented a new opportunity as Walker joined Forsythe Championship Racing, which fielded a pair of Champ Car Series cars and several Champ Car Atlantic (the next level down) cars. In 2007, Walker advanced to become a front end mechanic and he worked with Champ Car drivers Paul Tracy and Oriol Servia.

“I learned the ins and outs of being on the road,” Walker said. “I took some time out of the seat and it’s helped me ever since.

“The biggest thing I learned is how to run things and how to win at the shop, which makes you win at the race track. You can’t cut yourself short. I learned that you don’t get away with anything. Everything has to be perfect down to the nut and bolt and how you put it in. I learned how precise everything has to be and I carried that atmosphere into the way things should be in my sprint car program.”

Walker returned to his dirt roots in the spring of 2008 and has focused on sprint car racing since his unique opportunities.

“I learned a lot from those guys and made a lot of contacts within the industry,” he said. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’ve tried to apply the lessons and ideas I learned toward sprint car racing.”
