(Bill W) December 16, 2013 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team finished their strongest season with some historical victories. The Jackson Nationals, “Shaheen’s Blast from the Past” in Jacksonville, Illinois and the Winternationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Texas were among the prizes. Additionally, he was able to drive a car in remembrance of fellow Missouri sprint car pilot, Jesse Hockett.
Labor Day weekend was big for you. You were able to win the historic Jackson Nationals in Minnesota.
We had a lot of success there this year. We ran third the first night to Jeff Swindell and Gregg Bakker. We got snookered on the start a little bit. We were able to get the lead the second night. It laid rubber midway through the race and we were able to go on and win it. To be able to win the Jackson Nationals is huge. To put your name up there with Steve (Kinser), Sammy (Swindell), Danny (Lasoski), Doug Wolfgang and all of those guys is a dream come true. Winning that race goes up there with all our other career highlights.
The following night, you drove all the way to Moberly, Missouri and won their $4,000 special.
When you drive nine hours overnight like Chad (Morgan) and Travis (Marsch) did, the last thing you want to do is not run well. We were able to win that special at Moberly on that Sunday in front of a packed grandstand. It had been the first time that I’d been to Moberly in a while, and it worked out well. That track kind of reminds me of I-80 Speedway where we’ve had some success.
I know if was very special for you that Jack and Connie Hockett asked you to replicate Jesse’s car for the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.
When Jack called and asked me to run a car with their number, I jumped at it. Impact was able to do the graphics like Jesse’s last car and that was special. There was added pressure, not from Jack and Connie…you don’t want to disappoint. I felt like we gave it all both nights, we just came up one spot short. Hopefully, we can do that again sometime. That’s an event that keeps growing in size, and it’s for two very special kids.
Several of your second place finishes came in September.
Yea, we had nineteen seconds this year. Our goal for 2014 is to turn them into either wins or fifth place finishes where we really went for the win. That’s kind of our mindset. You have to figure out a way to get wins.
You ended that string with a win at the “Shaheen’s Blast from the Past” in Jacksonville.
That’s something that is special. MOWA is one of the up and coming series out there. Kenny Dobson has done a great job along with everyone else in getting it off the ground. To go there and win a race that I’ve seen Danny win, that I’ve seen Tom Corbin win, that I’ve seen the Standridge’s win, the Moughan’s…it’s very special. Sometimes you don’t realize it until you get that trophy home and look at something you’ll have forever. It’s one growing up I always wanted to win.
The next week you won the Devil’s Bowl Winternationals.
We started eighth and really pulled a rabbit out of our hat. We tried something that no one else did to go to the lead in four laps. To win the Winternationals at Devil’s Bowl is another one that’s special. It’s another race that you see Steve, Sammy, Wolfgang and Danny being able to win and it’s one that you dream of. It was really special.
It really was an incredible season for your team.
Having people like FVP, Casey’s General Stores, Searsboro Telephone Company, Impact, Smiley’s, Champion Brands, Ditzfeld Transfer, Weld, Maxim, Housby, TI-64, FSR, MSD, 6B, Garrett Racing Engines, Moyle Racing Engines, Shell Shock, Kenny's, etc.…all of our great product partners…they give us the opportunity to win these big races. It was really a career year for our team. I'd also like to thank my family Heather, Mikala, Mom, Dad, Greg, Cindy, all my grandparents, as well as Chad and Travis's family. Without their support we would never be able to do it. We also want to thank the fans for their never ending support. They are there when we win, and there when we lose. That's a huge part of why we’re successful. Finally, Chad Morgan and Travis Marsch deserve even more credit than I do on this, because you can’t win races without great teammates. I wouldn’t trade those two guys for the world. Chad has been with me since day one of being a car owner and he does a great job for us. Travis is moving home this year to be closer to his family and we can understand that and we appreciate all his hard work and dedication to this team in 2013.
As you look towards 2014, what do you see?
I’m really proud of where our team is headed. All of our partners will be back and we’re going to run a similar schedule. I’m just excited for what our future holds. Hopefully, we’ll be able to win the Knoxville Nationals. 2013 was a great year, and it will always be something we look back on as a huge accomplishment.
