Inside Line Promotions – VENTURA, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2013) – Dominic Scelzi capped his sophomore season in a sprint car on the right foot Saturday.

Scelzi charged from 17th to a fourth-place result in his nonwing 360 debut at Ventura Raceway driving for veteran Cory Kruseman.

“It was phenomenal,” Scelzi beamed. “I had a blast. I learned so much being able to learn from Cory. I really hope I’m able to work with him in the near future.”

After a successful hot-lap session, Scelzi started his heat race on the outside of the second row.

“I passed one car and then got passed by one car,” he said. “So I was running fourth and I had an issue that caused me to stop on the race track. I got back out there and passed one guy so I ended up seventh in the heat.”

Based on points, Scelzi started the 30-lap main event on the inside of the ninth row.

“This place was so small,” he said. “You were always racing with someone. I worked the bottom for the first couple of laps and I was able to get to 13th. On a restart around Lap 5 I picked off two more guys on the bottom and then moved to the top. It was pretty high up there. It was all the way slick up to the very top of the race track. It just started touching the fence on the exit of turn two. In turns three and four you could run above the middle or on the fence.”

Scelzi cracked the top 10 by the midpoint and continued to charge toward the front.

“We could come off the corner better than anyone,” he said. “I was able to get up to eighth by around Lap 18 and then two guys crashed so we were up to sixth. I had a fierce race with drivers from third to sixth place and we were all going at it. By the time I got to fourth the first three cars were pretty far ahead.”

Scelzi caught a caution in the closing laps to give him one final shot at a podium result.

“I got a pretty good restart and got up next to the guy in third, but I wasn’t able to get around him,” he said.

It marked Scelzi’s 15th top-five finish of the season.

His next scheduled race is the 28th annual Chili Bowl Nationals, which is Jan. 14-18 at the Tulsa Expo Raceway in Tulsa, Okla.
