Matt Covington – Sooner vs. Lone Star ASCS

Lucas Oil ASCS 360 sprint driver, Matt Covington, out of Glenpool, Oklahoma took the team to Oklahoma City this past weekend to compete in the ASCS Challenge between the Sooner and Lone Star Series. Drawing one of the highest numbers in the bucket set the T&L Foundry number 95 Covington sprinter on the outside of the 3rd row in the heat race to start out the evening. Matt had his elbows up throughout the 8 lap contest as he was able to power through the field and come out right behind the leader in the number 2 spot. Finishing in the top two of the heat race allowed him to make the redraw for the attempt to have a little better starting position for the main event on the 3/8ths mile dirt track. He started fourth and ran between 3rd and 5th throughout most of the event battling with fellow competitor, Tony Bruce Jr. With only two to go, Matt was passed by Tony and the Covington machine had to settle for a place just outside the top five at 6th.

The following night at the historic Devils Bowl Speedway located in Mesquite, TX, the Covington Motorsports team had just a little bad luck on their side. They again drew one of the highest numbers to set the pace for the night and in the heat race after starting at the tail, the inboard brakes began to come apart causing the rear end to lock up. Up to fifth, Matt had to pull it back just a bit to make it to the end and the number 95 T&L Foundry sponsored sprinter had to settle for a seventh place finish. Not making the transfer due to the mechanical failure the team had to hustle to make the “B” Main, to have any chance at all in making the main event. The team got the car fixed for the ‘B’, started on the inside of the 3rd row. Matt was able to pass for the lead on lap four and never looked back, transferring to the main event. Starting way back in the ninth row of the main event of the ASCS Sooner vs. Lone Star Challenge, Matt drove up through the field inside the top ten until a spin with ten laps to go put Matt back at the rear. He then made a very respectable drive towards the front throughout the remainder of the feature to finish 11th.

Next up for Matt Covington Racing will be the Steve King Memorial in Jetmore, Kansas for the attempt of the $10,000 check.
