Inside Line Promotions – SOMERTON, Ariz. (Nov. 11, 2013) – Mission accomplished.
Cole Wood wrapped up his season last weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour by finishing ninth in the championship standings and earning the Rookie of the Year Award.
“At the beginning of the year that was our main goal and I was happy that we got to do that,” Wood said. “It will be great that I have that title to put in front of my name next year.”
Wood ended the season with the premier 360ci sprint car series at Cocopah Speedway for Rounds 3 and 4 of the Cocopah Cup Challenge. While he garnered a top-10 finish in the standings and the famed award for the work all season, Wood is ready to put last weekend behind him.
“Not as good as we had planned,” he said. “It was one of those weekends. Just put it behind me and look forward to the Chili Bowl more than anything.”
On Friday, Wood dropped from fourth to sixth place in his heat race on the heavy track. That started him seventh in a B Main, which didn’t feature much passing. After ending sixth, Wood used a provisional to start 23rd in the 25-lap feature.
“I just couldn’t really do anything in the A Main,” he said after placing 21st. “The track was dry slick so I was just trying to figure it out.”
He returned to the 3/8-mile oval on Saturday for the season finale. After advancing from fourth to third place in his heat race, Wood was relegated to a B Main. He finished fourth in the consolation to miss a transfer by one spot. Wood used a provisional to start 24th in the main event.
“The race was actually pretty good until around Lap 20,” he said. “I followed Bryan Clauson all the way up to 13th. All of a sudden the car just started getting really loose. The way the track was you had to be right on the cushion. The last few laps I was just trying to hang on.”
Wood came to a stop on the frontstretch in the closing laps and finished with a 21st-place result for the second straight night.
