Scelzi Endures Disappointing Weekend at 20th annual Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions - TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2013) - A year after nearly picking up a victory at the prestigious Trophy Cup, Dominic Scelzi endured a frustrating outing last weekend.

Scelzi was unable to advance to the feature during the opening night of the doubleheader at Thunderbowl Raceway last Friday and he scratched from Saturday's competition at the 20th edition of the premier event.

"Especially being so close to winning it last year, it was a huge, huge disappointment," he said.

Scelzi got a tough break in the pill draw, which sent him out to qualify late in the order of the more than 80 drivers. As the track began to deteriorate, so did the qualifying times and Scelzi timed in 54th quickest. That wasn't high enough for a spot in a heat race and sent him to a nonqualifier.

"The pill draw is the main thing that got us," he said. "Once we got in the nonqualifier race they had watered the track right before we went out. The track was really, really fast. We were really right rear tight."

Scelzi started and finished third to advance to a D Main, which he started on the pole.

"In the D Main the car didn't take off again," he said. "The guy drove around me on the initial start. I had fell to third and got back to second. We were so right rear tight I couldn't do anything. We didn't think the track was as hooked up as it was. We left a lot of the right rear weight on the car. It made the car stand on the right rear. It was a combination of a couple of small things that added up to a bad weekend."

Scelzi placed second. Since the winner was the only driver to transfer, Scelzi's night ended early and the team decided not to compete on Saturday as they were buried in the lineup.

Scelzi will take this weekend off before wrapping up the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series at Stockton 99 Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 2, for the Tribute to Gary Patterson.

"We made some changes with the team," he said. "I really want to give a huge thank you to Roth Motorsports for their help and support for next weekend."

Scelzi garnered his first career King of the West feature victory on Aug. 3 at Stockton 99 Dirt Track.
