Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 22, 2013) – Jack Dover is closing his season on a strong note.
Dover powered to his fifth straight top five last Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway during the 40th annual Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“We finished in the top five with 50 cars there and we haven’t run with the ASCS National Tour much this year,” he said. “So that was a good result and shows we can still be competitive with the best.”
Dover was concerned after starting his heat race fifth on a narrow track. However, he advanced to the runner-up position by the midpoint and finished a close second to Tony Bruce Jr.
“We were kinda worried that we weren’t going to get much passing because we had a stacked heat race and the track wasn’t that great,” Dover said. “We got a good start and we ran in third the first two laps. I got to second place probably three laps into it. Then we got behind Tony and I changed my line a little and closed on him at the end.”
That earned Dover enough points to advance to the feature redraw. However, he pulled the No. 7 – the second-highest number – in the random draw to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“We got another good start and got up to sixth and that wreck happened with Wayne (Johnson) in it and that’s how we got up to fifth,” he said. “There was absolutely no passing. I just got in line and stayed there protecting the line. It was actually kinda of a boring night.”
Dover’s fifth-place finish marked his eighth top five in his last nine races and his 24th this season.
He is scheduled to wrap up the season this weekend at the 26th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals Presented by Hoosier Tires at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. Dover won a preliminary night during last season’s Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event.
“Here at this race you can’t go in expecting anything,” he said. “Short Track Nationals is like the Chili Bowl; it’s all luck. It starts with the draw. We’ve got a good car and a good motor. Now it’s up to lady luck.”
Dover’s preliminary night is slated for Friday.
