Marks Finishes Third in Points at Williams Grove, Sixth in Points at Lincoln

Inside Line Promotions – ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2013) – Brent Marks didn’t wrap up his regular-season campaigns at Williams Grove Speedway and Lincoln Speedway as he would have hoped.

Marks was caught in a late-race incident both nights last weekend to stymie a pair of top-10 performances.

“We had a really fast race car,” he said. “The results just didn’t show it.”

Marks closed the final points race at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., on Friday by placing where he started – fourth – in his heat race. That was one position out of the feature redraw and started Marks 13th in the 25-lap main event.

“Come feature time I figured we’d be really good,” he said. “We started out ok until the fuel load wore off. Then we got really good and started making a bunch of passes. Third through eighth place were all in a bunch and we were right there. I went to make a pass on Lance Dewease and Greg Hodnett. I went for a slide job on both of them and the 16 car broke getting into turn three and everybody checked up. I was in the process of a slide job and couldn’t stop the car. I got into Hodnett and we spun out.”

The incident in the final 10 laps of the race relegated Marks to the rear of the field and he rebounded for an 11th-place result. It also capped a third-place finish in the track championship, which is a career best for Marks.

“I was very happy with the way we ran Williams Grove this year,” he said. “We didn’t get the wins we wanted to, but we’ve been in contention every week. We’ve been fast enough to run up into the top five and that says a lot for us. I think we’ve got a winning race car; we just don’t have a championship winning race car. It’s so tough to win a championship there. We just need some more consistency and to try to position ourselves better for each race. Winning races from 16th and 17th isn’t happening anymore because everybody is so even.”

Marks ventured to the season finale at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday. However, after timing in third quickest, the race was postponed to Sunday because of rain.

With the race program restarting the ensuing day, Marks qualified second quickest and then charged from fourth to second place in his heat race.

“We started out really good,” he said. “We timed in second quick, which was great. I had a good heat race. The car was feeling really good and I was excited for the feature.”

However, the redraw pill was an eight – the highest number available – and Marks was forced to start on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

“We just missed it,” he said. “I kinda read the track a little wrong and just didn’t have a good race car. We had a seventh-place car. We just could not go anywhere. Toward the end of the race I was making a pass for sixth and the car I was passing ran in too hard and ran into me and we spun out. It was a disappointing end to the season at Lincoln.”

Despite missing most of the races at the track since August, Marks finished sixth in the Lincoln Speedway standings.

He is scheduled to compete on Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway for a features-only event.
