Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (October 14, 2013) Entries numbering 47 were on hand for the 39th annual Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals. Drivers from a dozen states made up the 2012 edition with Jeff Swindell notching the weekend sweep for the “Volunteer State” in the Hammers Family backed No. 94.
That many drivers and more are expected to be on hand for the 40th edition of the Winter Nationals as the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real dive into the final ten dates of the 2013 lineup.
Scheduled for Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19 reigning champion Jeff Swindell will look to add a second Winter Nationals title to his credit along with four other previous winners of the Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals.
Current Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real point’s leader Jason Johnson has topped the Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals twice with back-to-back scores in 2007 and 2008. Nebraska’s Jack Dover is scheduled to try and repeat his 2010 success as well as Travis Rilat who topped the field in 2006. Kevin Ramey, who has spent the 2013 season juggling between racing the promoting at the Kennedale Speedway Park, took the top podium step in 2009.
Paired with the Smiley’s Racing Products Lone Star Region, current regional point’s leader Matt Covington maintains a buffer of 158 makers over Patrick Stasa. Kolt Walker holds third in regional standings with Blake Hahn and John James making up the top five with this weekend’s Winter Nationals putting a wrap in the 2013 season.
Overall, the Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals has seen 21 different winners. Sammy Swindell has earned the top spot on eight occasions (1978, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1994, 1998, and 2000). Gary Wright’s five victories (1992, 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2005) stands second on the list with Doug Wolfgang taking the show position with a trio of victories (1980, 1981, and 1988).
Joe Saldana earned the inaugural 1974 victory. To date, the Saldana family is the only one to have a father, son victory to their credit with Joey Saldana winning in 2001.
The 40th Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19 will begin at 8:00 P.M. (CT) both nights. Grandstands open at 6:00 P.M. with Pit Gates open at 2:00 P.M.
Support classes for the weekend include Blaine’s USA Limited Modifieds both nights. Saturday will see the addition of DGS RaceSaver 305cid Sprint Cars. The Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals will be preceded by the seventh Steve King Foundation Golf Tournament of Champions presented by Smiley’s Racing Products and Hoosier Tire Southwest on Thursday, October 17 at the Buffalo Creek Golf Club on Rockwall, Texas to again help raise funds for the continued work of the Steve King Foundation.
The Steve King Foundation Golf Tournament of Champions presented by Smiley’s Racing Products and Hoosier Tire Southwest will open at 10:30 A.M. with registration. The tournament begins at Noon.
