The #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports sprint car team and Scotty Thiel have been on a strong run the last few weeks with back to back weekend wins. Friday the 13th did not stop the team’s momentum as they went on to clean sweep the night at the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Scotty was set to go in the first group of qualifying for the MSA Sprint cars on Friday night. The track was just starting to come around from being on the greasy side. The cars got the green flag where they would make five laps and their fastest time would count as their qualifying lap. Scotty laid down five almost perfect laps and would come out with the third fastest lap of the evening. That would place him to start outside the third row of the heat race event.
The crew made some minor adjustments to the car as the track came around and stayed tacky for the majority of the night. The heat race got lined up and came down to turn four and took the green flag. In the first corner, Scotty split the field in the middle of the corner and moved up to the third spot coming out of turn two. He stormed down the back stretch and had plenty of momentum to slide past the second place car and take over the position. He jumped back up to the high side of the track and carried his speed to get up to the leader and would take over the lead in turn three and four. In only two fast laps, Thiel went from sixth to first! Scotty never looked back after grabbing the lead and checked out from the field. In the next six laps of the heat he managed to pull away from the field by almost a full half of a track. The invert for the A-main was a 12 which would set Thiel to start 11th in the night’s 25 lap A-main event.
After getting pushed off and getting a couple fast laps before lining up, Scotty knew the car would be good but he would have to come from the 11th position to make anything happen. The field received the one to go signal and began to get bunched up. Coming out of turn four the green flag flew. Thiel did not hesitate as he shot to the middle of the track in turn one and moved past several cars going down the back stretch. He worked the high side and low line for the next few laps. He found himself in the fifth position with only five laps into the main. In the next three laps, Scotty moved up into the third position and was running the leaders down. The caution flag flew on lap eight of the main after a car spun in turn one. This gave Scotty the chance to get bunched up with the lead cars. After returning back to green flag action, Scotty worked the high side to take over the second place position. He rode in second for the next few laps and gained some ground on the leader. The two caught lap traffic and the battle began. Scotty charged down on the low line in turn three and pulled alongside of the leader going down the front stretch. A lap car forced Thiel back up to the high side and settled back into the second spot. The lead car would go down low in turn three and Scotty shot around the top side and again came alongside the leader out of four. The battle continued for a few more laps and the opportunity came for Scotty to take over the lead going into turn two. He zoomed around the top side and grabbed the top spot. He never looked back after and began to check away from the other lead cars. Thiel pulled away over a full straight within the remaining laps of the main and came out of turn four to take home his third straight A-main win in a row!
“Man, this #64 Professional Plating, Triple X, Avon Powered 360 was hooked up tonight! We ran here back in June with the 410’s and were having a good run from 18th to sixth before something broke and put us in the wall. We for sure made up for that one tonight! I knew we would have a good car in the main but coming from 11th is pretty tough amongst this field. The 6k got me a few weeks ago in lap traffic to take the win and tonight it was the opposite. This is the third win in a row for this team. These guys have been working hard every week and it’s been paying off!” Said an excited Scotty Thiel.
Saturday night brought the team back to the Plymouth Dirt Track where they had won the week prior. In the heat race event, Scotty started fifth and was passing for the third position when the motor went down. He pulled off the track and headed back to the trailer where they discovered an issue in the valve train. That would end their night and the chance to keep their winning streak alive.
Next stop on the STM schedule is this coming Friday night at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Scotty has one at this track a year ago this time. He’s hoping to keep the record alive and pull off win number six of the 2013 season.
