Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (Sept. 10, 2013) – Jack Dover was only a handful of laps away from putting together a perfect weekend and earning three feature victories in three days for the first time ever.
Dover won two heat races, two qualifiers and two features before engine issues forced him to the pits with five laps remaining on Sunday at Eagle Raceway, sacrificing his second position and a shot at the undefeated weekend.
“I think it was a great weekend,” he said. “It sucks we had motor problems, but that’s part of racing.”
The weekend started on Friday with his inaugural visit to Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, with the ASCS Midwest Region. Officials decided to run two 10-lap qualifiers prior to the feature.
Dover won both, charging from eighth place in the first one and from last – 13th – in the second. He earned 96 more points than any other driver entering the feature redraw, which determined the first four rows of the main event. Dover then pulled the No. 4 to start on the outside of the second row.
“I just took it easy the first 10 laps and then started driving the car hard,” he said. “I actually took a bunch of gear out. It took me a while to build my momentum up. Once we got the lead we checked out.”
Dover took the top spot approximately a third of the way through the main event and cruised to the victory.
The momentum continued the ensuing night at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., with the ASCS Midwest Region. Once again, Dover worked to the lead early in his heat race en route to earning a position in the feature redraw. This time he got the second-highest number – seven – to start on the inside of the fourth row.
“I thought I took too much gear out again,” he said. “A red flag came out and they opened the red. We made some changes and tightened the car up.”
Dover advanced to second place in the closing laps, but the leader had a sizeable advantage.
“He had a straightaway distance on me with two laps to go,” Dover said. “I got my momentum built up and I didn’t lift. On the back straightaway on the last lap he went low and I went high. I told myself I was either going to win it or wreck it. It was a close call. I moved up and was lucky enough to get enough grip and go by him. It was awesome though.”
Dover made the winning move by driving into the lead in turn four on the final lap to score his second straight win and fourth in the last seven races. It was also Dover’s 12th feature victory of the season.
After the team did an engine swap Sunday morning they headed to Eagle Raceway for the $5,000-to-win Nebraska Cup. Dover won his heat race after starting third and then pulled the No. 1 in the feature redraw to start on the pole for the 30-lap feature.
“I got the lead right away and I was driving hard in the beginning,” he said. “When we started getting to lapped traffic I went easy. I got into lapped traffic and that’s where the battle began. On lap 22 Jason (Johnson) slid me and we did slide jobs for two or three laps. That’s when my motor started going so I pulled off. We were right on his bumper.”
After leading the most laps, which earned Dover almost $1,000 in bonuses thanks to Brad Brown and other donors, Dover exited the track with approximately five laps remaining. He was credited with an 18th-place result.
Dover is taking this weekend off for his sister’s wedding before returning to the track at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., on Sept. 20-21.
