This past Labor Day weekend brought the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to North Central Speedway in Brainerd, MN for the Mighty Axe Nationals. After running second Thiel would get caught up in a lap traffic wreck on night one but came back strong on the second night to make a last lap pass in turn one and took home the Mighty Axe!
Scotty drew a 48 pill which set him to start seventh in the heat race event on night number one of the Mighty Axe Nationals. A rain shower came through which prolonged the program an extra two hours. Tacky track conditions were presented for the field in the heat race. After getting the green flag, the front row slapped wheels and a may lay took place in turn one. One car went upside down and a few cars spun out. Scotty made it through clear and would move up to the fifth spot on the restart. After going back to green flag action, Scotty worked his way up to the third spot right away and would get close to the second spot but came up short after ten laps. With that finish and the invert, it would place Thiel to start in the sixth position for the first night of the Mighty Axe 25 lap A-main event.
The field pushed off and got lined up. They bunched up in turn four and took the green flag. A few front row cars got a little out of shape coming down the back stretch and Scotty would take advantage of the mishap and jump into the second position coming back out of turn four. He chased down the leader within the next few laps and settled in for a few laps to wait for lap traffic. A red flag came out just before the halfway point of the A-main. Scotty knew he was faster than the leader, especially when they got into lap traffic. After going back to green flag action, he settled in the second spot and waited until lap traffic came into play. A fast five laps later, they entered into lap traffic. Going into turn one, the lead car was going to slide a lap car but made contact and spun right in front of Scotty. He tried to get off the cushion and under the spinning cars but clipped the rear end of a car, blowing out a right rear tire and bending up some front end components. That would end Thiel’s chance for the night to take home the Axe on night number one.
“We had a crazy fast car all night. I was just abiding my time during the main but got caught up in some lap traffic mess after the leader made contact. It was our night but nothing you can do when you wreck the car. We will be on a mission tomorrow night.” Said a disappointed Thiel.
Night number two was completely opposite of the first night as far as track conditions went. A super dry slick track was presented right away in hot laps. Scotty drew a 23 pill which set him to start on the outside front row of the heat race event. After taking the green flag, Scotty settled into second right away but was unable to make up the ground on the leader and came home in the second spot. That finish would set Thiel to start fifth in the Sprint Challenge race. The track would get slicker and slicker as the night went on. The field came down to take the green for the challenge race. Scotty worked the low line right away. He moved up to the third spot going down the backstretch and gained some ground again off of turn four on the second place car. One lap later, Thiel was able to make the pass for second and charged for the leader. With only five laps left, Scotty slowly reeled the leader in to one car length but was unable to make a battle happen and had to settle for the second place finish.
After the invert of the night, Thiel would start on the outside front row of the 25 lap Mighty Axe A-main event. The crew worked hard to prepare a car for the extremely slick conditions. Scotty felt the car out after getting pushed off and knew he had a car that would be good enough to win. The field would get bunched up and prepared to take the green flag. On the initial start, the leader pushed up and Scotty was forced to check up and slapped the wall lightly with the right rear tire. He lost a few spots on the front stretch but charged back up to third coming out of turn two. He ran in third for the first five laps and made the slide job on the second place car in turn one. The leader was insight and he began to slowly reel in the gap. An early caution came out for a car spinning in turn two. That was the chance to get the field bunch back up. Scotty didn’t get the best restart and the leader pulled away a few car lengths. That didn’t stop Thiel as he charged back up to the leaders tail in the next few laps. He showed a nose a couple times in the next few laps as they began to enter into lap traffic. Scotty started to pin point the areas where he could gain a lot of ground and used it to his advantage in lap traffic. With only two laps to go, Scotty charged hard in turn one and came out side by side with the leader coming down the backstretch. The leader tried to run Thiel down in turn three but that didn’t stop Scotty as he regrouped himself down the backstretch and put the slide job on the leader in turn one. He would take over the lead down the back stretch and held on in turn three and four to come down the front stretch and take home the Mighty Axe Nationals win!
“Wow that was a heck of a race! I knew we had a car that was capable of winning this race but just didn’t know when the right time was. With like ten to go, I knew the rubber was coming in off turn two and used it to my advantage to get a run in turn three. We battled hard and I honestly didn’t know it was the last lap when I threw the slider in one. I came out of four in the lead and the checkered was waving! Can’t thank my hard working guys enough for giving me a great car and I have to give a special thanks to Mastell Brothers Trailer Service for providing us with an engine to make this weekend possible!”
That was Thiel’s second Mighty Axe of his sprint car career. Last year he took home the win on the second night as well.
