Inside Line Promotions - SALINA, Okla. (Aug. 18, 2013) - After a rough start on Saturday, the streak continued for Derek Hagar.
Hagar, who was caught up in an opening-lap crash at Salina Highbanks Speedway with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour, rebounded to record a seventh-place finish to keep his streak of finishing in the top nine alive.
"To go up there and run in the top 10 with the ASCS guys is a pretty big accomplishment," he said.
It marked his 26th top 10 in as many races this season. In fact, Hagar's worst finish has been ninth, which has happened only twice.
After winning his heat race, which locked him into Saturday's feature and earned him enough points into the feature redraw - when he pulled the No. 8 to start on the outside of the fourth row - Hagar wasn't in a good position during the first lap.
"I took the green flag and there was a pileup going into turn one," he said. "I didn't have anywhere to go and got caught in it."
Hagar was forced to restart at the back of the 22-car field, but he quickly figured out where he had an advantage around the high-banked oval.
"A lot of people would go in on the top in turns one and two and the track flattened off and was slick, so you had to wait on the car pretty long," he said. "I tried a few different things. While they were waiting on the car coming off (turn) two, I'd go down and work the moisture. It would set me up for slide jobs going into (turn) three."
Hagar worked his way into the top 10 and capitalized on a late restart to gain a couple of positions in the closing laps to secure the seventh-place result.
"The race track was real good," he said. "It was nice and slick. That race track is probably one of the best tracks we go to as far as slide jobs and racing."
Hagar is scheduled to compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., on Thursday before wrapping up the weekend on Saturday at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga., with the USCS.
Hagar won a B Main and charged from 17th to ninth with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at I-30 Speedway in April.
