Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (August 14, 2013) – The winged Sprint
Cars of the American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region will sling the
Canyon Speedway Park clay once again on Saturday night as part of the
track's Allscapes Back to School Special.
Following Wednesday evening's open practice session from 6:00 p.m. to
9:00 p.m., Saturday's Allscapes Back to School Special will include
the ASCS Southwest Winged Sprint Cars along with IMCA Modifieds, Viper
Smart Start Pure Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Renegades.
Saturday's racing action will get under way at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday's tilt marks the second appearance of the season for the ASCS
Southwest Region at CSP after reigning series champion and current
points leader Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, NM, topped the Father's Day
Classic in June.
With three series triumphs to his credit, Ziehl holds an advantage of
more than 200 points over Glendale, Arizona's Joshua Williams with
Billy Chester III, Lance Norick and Kaylene Verville the current top
five in points. While Ziehl leads the points chase, sixth-ranked
Lorne Wofford of Alamogordo tops the win charts at four.
In the IMCA Modified ranks, a mere four points separate the top three
in the championship race with Ricky Thornton, Jr., just four points
ahead of the duo of Anthony Madrid and Jason Noll, who are tied for
second. Jay Foster is just another six points back in fourth, with
Guy Norton rounding out the current top five.
Noll topped the most recent Modified action on July 13 and has won
three of the last four feature events.
Matt Martinez broke through for his first Viper Smart Start Pure Stock
win of the year on July 27 after Bo Partain and Anthony Madrid topped
the initial seven features of the year. Chris McCurdy, Jr., enters
Saturday's action with the points lead by seven markers over Ryan
Eaden with Martinez in third.
John Romero is perfect in Renegade action with four wins in four tries
to build an eight-point advantage over Paul O'Connor in the points
chase with Trenton Setelin in third.
The Dwarf Cars have dealt up three winners in as many events with Mike
Strobel the most recent winner on July 13.
