Friday July 9th, the Scott Thiel Motorsports team made their comeback appearance at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway with their MSA 360 car. They have been struggling all year with engine issues and now the problems seem to be fixed as they had two strong podium finishes both Friday and Saturday night!
Scotty drew an eight pill to start out the heat race event at Manitowoc on Friday night. That placed him to start on the pole of the ten lap race. Very slick track conditions were presented to the field as they took the green flag. Thiel was able to grab on to the early lead but slid up way to high one lap later and gave the lead away. He battled back strong but was unable to take over the lead again and would come home with a second place finish and a third place starting spot in the night’s A-Main event.
The nights Bill Behling Memorial 30 Lap A-main event set across the track to get pushed off. Scotty would start in the third place position. The track was again extremely slick and did not have a cushion. This was going to make for an interesting race. The field took the green and stormed into turn one. Every car made it out of the first turn but they were all wheel to wheel going down the backstretch. After a few laps, they all spread out and not much passing was taking place. Several cars were using the infield out of turn two to make up some ground and that turned into the majority of the field using it to their advantage to gain some positions. Scotty maintained third place for the first half of the race but began to get passed when the cars were using the bottom on turn two as a way to pass. He was able to work his way back up to the lead cars and a battle took place with only ten laps to go. Scotty used his patience and worked his way back up into the second position with only a few laps to go. A green to checkered race happened and Scotty came across the line in the second position. After the race, officials tried to determine if penalties would be issued for cars that used the infield to advance their position. A large controversy took place and no answers were made until a further date. “I’m not sure what that was out there but I feel horrible for the fans that had to sit and watch that. The track was smooth but just ridiculously sick and no passing took place. Everyone was using the infield, plain and simple. I don’t know what they will do about that.” Scotty mentioned after the race.
Scotty’s website was later updated that he officially finished 3rd. That result is still unofficial as the track has not released an official statement on the finish of Friday’s event.
Saturday night was a new night and a different track for the series. They would make their way to the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Scotty drew a 42 pill which set him to start in the sixth position but a car that started on the front row had scratched, moving Thiel up one row to the forth starting spot. The field took the green and Scotty began to work the top side of the track. The bottom appeared to be faster but Scotty could not get down on the bottom as he battled over the third place spot for all ten laps of the heat. Finally, on the last lap, Scotty was able to get a great run off of turn two and took over the third position and would cross the line. That finish gave him a third place starting spot again for Saturday nights 25 lap A-main event. The pole car did not fire when the field was getting pushed off for the A-main event, so that moved Scotty up to the pole position. He was more than ready as he was able to get a great start when the green flag dropped. He charged hard to turn one and would slide up to the top side. He began to pull away from the field and started getting into lap traffic only six laps into the main. He worked traffic really well but a red flag came out on lap eight. The track would go back one lap and the lead cars had all stuck together through lap traffic so Scotty would restart out front but no lap cars were in between. He again was able to get a good start and continued to work the high side groove. He would lead for another ten laps before he messed up one time in lap traffic and gave the lead up. He charged back at the leader and close the gap to half a car when the white flag flew. Scotty stormed into turn one and tried to complete a slide job but came up short as he was side by side with the leader coming out of turn two. Scotty tried to regain his ground but the top groove momentum took the leader past and Scotty would come home in the second place position.
“Man, we had a good car tonight. That Avon Automotive power really showed what it had. I watched the gauges for a lap and messed up a little in lap traffic and that’s what costs us the win tonight. I can’t thank my crew enough for working really hard the last two nights. They made my job easy tonight but I just messed up. We’ll get after it next week” Scotty’s post-race comments.
Next week’s racing plans for STM will be Friday night at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway in Manitowoc, WI and Saturday night at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin for the Kouba Memorial. This is the track where Scotty and the team took home a $5,000 payday back in June.
