STM - Overcomes Adversity with a Top 10 at Beaver Dam

After not being able to pick up their MSA 360 motor from the motor builders, the Scott Thiel Motorsports team was left with the only option of going and racing Saturday night at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin with the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprint Car Series. The team has ran their in the past with the 410’s and have had some success. This time, the team proved that they could overcome adversity and come from behind to round a night with a solid performance. After a flip in the heat race, Scotty drove his way up through the B-Main, making the transfer for the A, and passed 12 cars from the 20th starting position to finish off the night in 8th place!
Scotty was the fourth car out for qualifying on a track that was going to be pretty quick. After the 33 car field completed qualifying, Thiel was listed in the 18th overall quickest time with his ASCS 360. That set him to start on the outside pole of the heat race event.
The field was set for the ten lap heat race event where Scotty would start on the outside front row. The green flag flew and they took off out of corner number four. Scotty gradually moved towards the wall but before he knew it the pole sitter and come up to the wall as well and made contact. Scotty’s car got sideways, hooked the cushion, and flipped several times in turn one. The Midwest Safety Crew was right there on the spot and assisted to get Scotty’s car turned back over. Scotty climbed out unharmed and walked back to the trailer. He knew that the team would have some work to do to get the car fixed and ready to go again.

The car returned back to the pits on the hook and the team got it up on stands, where they proceeded to review the damages. The frame seemed straight but with some minor dings and dents. The began to get a new front end, nose wing, top wing, shocks, and some radius rods and ready and put on the car. They had only a limited amount of races in between their heat and when the B-main was up but they hustled along and were able to get the car back out for the B-main event. Scotty would go out and start in the sixth position.

After the green flag flew, Scotty felt the car out and maintained the sixth position for the first few laps. A caution came out on lap seven where Thiel noticed that the nose wing had fell back on the car. He knew it was going to be a difficult eight laps to hold on to what was going to be a very tight handling race car. After going back green, Scotty charged hard and worked the bottom groove of the track. He moved up to the second position coming down the backstretch. The car started to get more and more tight but he held on and would round out the race in the fourth position, earning a 20th place starting spot for the night’s 30 Bumper to Bumper A-Main event.

The crew went to work on getting the car fine-tuned for the A-main event. Scotty knew that starting 20th was going to be a challenge but remembered that the last time they ran he came from 15th to 6th. The field got pushed off and was given the command to line up. They bunched up in turn four and took the green flag. Scotty immediately jumped up to the cushion and began to make his way forward. He moved up several spots in the first lap and kept working the cushion for the next few laps. A few early cautions took place, allowing the field to get bunched back up together. Scotty found himself in the 12th position with ten laps completed. The field went back to green and Scotty now began to work both grooves of the track to make passes happen. With only 12 laps to go, Scotty worked his way up in the top ten. Another restart took place and Thiel charged his way up into the sixth position and was right behind the leaders. The yellow flew once again with only seven laps to go. Scotty’s left rear tire was getting pretty soft on air and after going back to green it started to upset the cars handling. The white flag flew and Scotty was in a battle to hold on to the seventh position but would fall short at the line and end up finishing in the eighth place position. Scotty came back in the pits with the Left Rear tire basically flat due to it being blistered.

“Wow what a night, is all I really have to say. We got wrecked in the heat but these guys worked their butts off and gave me a car that was race ready just in time for the B. I felt the car out quick before we got lined up and it felt pretty good and knew we had to charge in order to make it in the show. That was actually a strong B-main to be in. Ended up I think 4th and moved on to the A. The car was just hooked up in that feature. Moved all the way up to sixth but fell back to eighth on the last restart. I thought it was me but that left rear tire didn’t help the cause. Overall, I’m happy on how the night ended and I cannot thank these hard working crew guys enough for getting us back out there!” Scotty mentioned after the night.

Next stop on the STM Schedule will be this coming weekend with the MSA 360 Series. Friday night will be at Manitowoc Expo Speedway for the 1st Annual Bill Behling Memorial Race and Saturday night at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI.
