Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 6, 2013) – It’s been an eventful week for Jack Dover, beginning last Friday during his preliminary night at the 23rd annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals.
A bad draw sent Dover out to qualify late at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, where he qualified 11th quickest before an engine issue forced him to the pits during his second lap of the two-lap time trials.
“For only having one lap that was pretty good,” he said. “I think the second lap would have been better. I had a deep gear in there and my momentum was getting better and better. Coming out of (turn) two we lost a cylinder.”
As the team scrambled to change engines, Dover was scheduled to start fourth in the first heat. The team finished putting the car back together just after the heat started, which kept Dover in the pits.
“We would have been ready for the second heat if we would have been in it,” he said. “That’s how close it was. It was frustrating.”
That started him on the outside of the C Main, which Dover won to transfer to the B Main. After starting 21st, he rallied to place 12th.
“We had a really good car,” he said. “It gets so spread out and everybody is so fast it’s hard to pass those cars after the first two laps.”
Dover was slated to start in the middle of the C Main on Saturday during the finale of the $10,000-to-win event, so he scratched. However, a unique opportunity presented itself as he hung out in the pits.
Dover was introduced to Mike Baughman, who was looking for a driver to compete during this week’s 53rd annual FVP Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. The duo agreed to try things out on Monday during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway.
With 51 cars competing, Dover started on the inside of the third row for his eight-lap heat race. However, a bad vibration and damaged nose wing forced him to the pits midway through the race. He was relegated to start 14th in a B Main, which transferred the top four to the back of the feature.
“I did some other stuff for the B Main and the car got a lot better,” he said. “I definitely think we would have made it in if we would have gotten a late caution.”
Instead the race went caution-free as Dover charged from 14th to sixth place, missing a transfer by two positions. He passed twice as many cars as any other driver during the consolation races.
“The car is really comfortable,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the 410 Knoxville Nationals this week.”
Dover’s preliminary night is scheduled for Wednesday with action continuing through Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
