STM – Top 5 Friday, Mother Nature Wins Saturday

The Scott Thiel Motorsports team headed out Friday morning to the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, WI for the 1st Annual Dan Grams Memorial race with the UMSS Sprint Car Series. This was the track where Scotty Thiel picked up his first Open Wheel Nationals Championship and a $5,000 payday one month prior. A solid 25 car field was on hand and prepared to hit the track. A small rain shower came through which made for an early tacky track. Scotty picked a 51 pill which set him to start 7th in the heat race event.

The field bunched up in turns three and four and took the green flag. Thiel tried to work the bottom in turn one but the door got shut. He regrouped down the backstretch and began to make some passes in turn three. He picked up two spots coming down the front stretch and continued to work the bottom and picked off several cars in the next few laps. Scotty worked his way up to third with only three laps to go and made the pass for second coming out of turn two. He jumped up to the high side in turn three and charged down the leader who was a full straight ahead. Within the next two laps, Thiel closed the gap to only two car lengths and came across the line in the second spot. With the high amount of passing points, he would have to start eighth in the 12 lap challenge race.

In the 12 lap challenge race, Scotty started in the eighth position. He knew he would have to do what he did in the heat in order to make the move to get back up front. The green flag flew and Scotty worked the top groove for a few laps and made several passes. He began to dice around the track and worked his way up into fourth. With five laps to go, a battle began to take place for the third position. Scotty worked the bottom side one last time and made the pass for position. He jumped back up to the top and charged to the second place car. Laps were running down but Thiel was unable to make the move and would cross the line in the third position, making him the second high point driver of the night. After the 6 pill invert was picked, that placed Thiel to start the 26 lap A-main event in the fifth position.

A big cushion came into play for the 26 lap A-main event. The drivers got in line and prepared to take the green flag. As the green dropped, Scotty charged hard to the bottom of turn one and made it up to the second position coming out of turn two. The start was called back for a car spinning. They got lined back up again and prepared to take the green. This time, Scotty was unable to get a good jump and remaining in the fifth position coming out of turn two. He worked his way back up to the top side and made it up to the third position. He had a really fast car but the track became a one groove track on the cushion and made for passing to be extremely difficult. He stuck his nose in on the second place car a few time but came up short to take over the position. A few restarts took place throughout the first half of the main and Scotty lost one spot on the last restart. He made the pass back for third with about six laps to go and charged back up with the leaders. The top five cars were nose to tail with a few laps remaining. Coming down into turn three, with only two laps to go, Scotty jumped the cushion and lost a position, dropping him back to fourth. He was unable to regain that spot and would come home in the fourth place position.

“We had a really good car all night long. We were able to make some good passes early on and moved up quite a bit. I don’t know what it was in the main but the car was really good, I just wasn’t driving it right at all. I feel bad for my guys who work really hard on this deal. I let them down tonight. Hopefully we can get it together and get a win tomorrow night.” Said a disappointed Thiel after the night.

The crew took the car to the car wash that night and prepared it for Saturday nights race action. They got to Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday around noon and watched it rain for two hours. At 2:30, the track decided to cancel the event. Scotty and the crew decided to take the chance and hustle up 150 miles to the north to attempt to race with the IRA 410 Sprints in Ashland, Wisconsin. The team pulled into Ashland at 5:30 and just as they pulled into the pit area, ABC Raceway made the call to cancel the show due to wet conditions. The team was bummed but had to make the effort to get back out on the track.

This week’s racing plans are Friday night at the Manitowoc Expo Speedway in Manitowoc, WI and Saturday night at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wisconsin with the MSA 360 Sprints. The STM team has been struggling with their MSA program in 2013 but got the motor rebuilt and are excited to charge for a couple of wins this weekend back at home.
