Inside Line Promotions - ALGER, Wash. (July 29, 2013) - What shaped up to be another great weekend for Trey Starks ended on a sour note.
Starks was sidelined midway through the Bob's Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals feature while running fifth because of a rear end failure on Saturday at Skagit Speedway.
"It's just kind of a bummer because you don't expect that to break, especially not in a big race," he said. "I guess that's just the way things go."
Starks, who started sixth after finishing in that position during the A Main scramble, quickly reached the fifth position during a race that featured numerous cautions.
"There was way too many cautions," he said. "I think we had three or four by Lap 10. It would have been nice to get more green flag laps because our car was better in open runs."
During a caution around the middle of the 40-lap feature, misfortune forced Starks to the pits.
"We were about to go back green and I went down to the bottom of the track," he said. "I went to clear the motor out and right when I went to step on the throttle it spun like it came out of gear. We broke the rear end."
That ended his weekend with an 18th-place finish.
It was an unfortunate result for such a promising weekend. Starks opened the Summer Nationals on Friday by qualifying 12th quickest and finishing third in his heat race, which locked him into the feature.
"Qualifying wasn't really as good as we wanted," he said. "It was kind of an odd track. The bottom was just good enough to trick you into going down to it in (turns) one and two. I ran the top one lap and the bottom the other lap and we had two laps that were identical."
Since the drivers who advanced through the heat races were inverted for the feature, Starks started the main event on the inside of the fifth row.
"The feature went really nice," he said. "It was pretty smooth. We rolled the top pretty well. We picked one by one off. It wasn't all at once. We were up to eighth by the 10th lap or so and then we just kept picking them off. We ran out of laps and were still going forward."
Starks placed fourth, which was his 13th top five of the season and it earned him enough points into the A Main scramble.
"It gave us some good points," he said. "We were happy with it."
Starks will return to Skagit Speedway on Saturday.
