Brian Brown Tops Last Prep for Sprintweek!

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, July 27, 2013 – Brian Brown emerged victorious in the 410 class Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway in the last action before Southern Iowa Sprintweek gets underway this Thursday night with the 23rd Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals. Randy Martin earned his 19th career 360 win, and Travis Cram returned for the first time in two years to win the 305 feature.

San Jose, California’s Tim Kaeding shot out from his pole position to lead the 20-lap 410 feature in the early stages. The event struggled to get started after Rico Abreu spun, collecting Tasker Phillips. Both drivers would retire.

Kaeding led Brian Brown, Terry McCarl, Wayne Johnson and a duel between Ian Madsen and Bronson Maeschen for the fifth position. With nine laps in the books, Glen Saville spun, collecting Dustin Selvage. Both drivers would change tires and continue.

Brown used the bottom of the raceway to slide in front of Kaeding as the two battled for the lead after the restart. Meanwhile, Maeschen moved by Johnson into fourth, and Mark Dobmeier moved into the top five from row seven.

Another yellow, this one for debris with twelve laps down, gave Kaeding an opportunity to ride the cushion back into the lead. Back and forth the lead went, and Brown seized it again on lap fifteen. On the next circuit, Kaeding’s rear-end let go. Dusty Zomer brought out the last caution of the event with a flat left rear tire on lap 16.

Brown was able to hold off Maeschen for the win, ahead of McCarl, hard-charger Dobmeier and Danny Lasoski. Madsen, Justin Henderson, Brad Sweet, Johnson and Jon Agan rounded out the top ten. Madsen posted quick time, while Lasoski, Kaeding, Lynton Jeffrey and Dobmeier won heat races. Davey Heskin won the B.

“Anytime you can beat Tim Kaeding…he’s a heck of a racer,” said Brown in Victory Lane. “He’s one of the best racecar drivers in the country right now. He passed me when I was running the bottom, which is uncharacteristic of me. I was able to get back by him on a restart and it worked out. If we can do this in a couple of weeks, it’s going to be the best night of my life. I don’t know if we can beat (Donny) Schatz, but we’re sure going to try!”

The last prep for the 360 Nationals saw RJ Johnson lead from the pole in the 360 class’s 18-lap feature. With just four laps in, Brandon Hanks slowed to bring the caution. The yellow flag negated Billy Alley’s pass of Randy Martin for the second spot. Following the lead trio were Brian Brown, Clint Garner and Joe Beaver.

Brown shot into third on the restart, but suffered from a stuck throttle and shut it down. On the restart, something broke on the RJ Johnson machine, sending him careening into the turn three wall. He was uninjured.

With twelve laps to go, Martin led Alley, Garner, Beaver and Dustin Selvage. Craziness in turn three ensued again, as Garner flipped from the third spot, and Beaver lost his right rear wheel. Both were done.

Alley challenged Martin the rest of the way, but the veteran held him off for his 19th career win (third all-time). Selvage was third, ahead of Rager Phillips and Jarrod Schneiderman. Jamie Ball, hard-charger Russ Hall, Nate Van Haaften, Matt Moro and Jamie Veal rounded out the top ten. Ball set quick time, while Chris Martin, Phillips, Schneiderman and Brown won heat races. Moro won the B. Jon Agan suffered a tough night with a heat race flip in turn one. He was uninjured, but done in the 360 for the night.

“It was good to get another win up here,” said California, Missouri’s Martin. “I saw Brownie had his problems there, and the 40 and 53 crashed. Billy is tough, and I knew if I messed up one time, it’s over. I did a lot of praying those last three laps. This was the first Chevy Roush-Yates ever built. I’m excited to get a win for them.”

Chris Walraven shot out to the early lead in the 12-lap 305 feature. When Sawyer Phillips climbed the back end of Bob Hildreth’s machine and left it crippled, the caution came out with just a lap in the books.

Travis Cram restarted second, ahead of Josh Higday, Larry Ball Jr. and Stacey Alexander. Ball quickly shot into third, while Cram exercised a move for the lead on lap four, acing his old 410 counterpart in the process.

Cram was able to survive one more caution to win in Bruce Clark’s #66 in his first outing in two years. Ball moved into second ahead of Walraven with two laps to go. Higday and Steve Breazeale followed. Matt Stephenson, Mike Mayberry, Steve Palmer, hard-charger Tanner Edwards and Andrew Shelton rounded out the top ten.

Mayberry posted quick time, while Stephenson and Walraven took heat race wins.

“I was kind of wondering how these 305’s would go around the top,” said Cram in Victory Lane. “They are kind of low on power. It’s pretty easy to sneak around the bottom. It worked out well. I spent quite a few years racing with those two (Walraven and Ball). I knew I was getting a better jump out of two than Walraven. He made it interesting going down the back chute.”
