Thiel Experiences Eldora!

Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team headed to Eldora Speedway on July 12th and 13th for the Kings Royal event. They raced with the NRA 360 Sprint Invaders portion of the Kings Royal show. This was the first time Scotty had ever been to Eldora and a lot would be in store for him as the weekend came near.

The first time on the track, Scotty was given two laps of hot laps which counted for qualifying. That session did not go that great as he was trying to get a feel for what Eldora had to offer, SPEED. Thiel qualified around the 20th position and would place him to start on the outside front row of the heat race event. He was able to get the early lead and held it for six laps. Coming down the backstretch, Scotty hit a rut going into three and would give up the lead. He managed to hold on to the second place position and locked himself in the 25 lap A-main event. “Hey, for the first time here at Eldora, I can’t complain about a second place run in the heat. Had the lead, but just bobbled a bit up in turn three. Learning more about this track every time we go out there.” Scotty mentioned after the race.

Thiel would get pushed out and get ready for the 25 lap main event. He started 12th and would have to work his way up through the field of stellar cars. They came down and took the green. Scotty worked the middle to high groove for the first few laps and maintained his ground. He moved up a few spots early on but fought a ill handling car for the better part of the race. A late red flag came out and a few laps before, Scotty noticed the nose wing was pushed back, making the handling of the car even worse. After returning back to green flag action, Scotty managed to hold on to a 14th place finish for the first time ever racing a main event at Eldora. “The car was tough to drive all night. We missed the set up a tad. I’m considering this a practice night for us and we will regroup and try again tomorrow night. This track is a track where you need confidence in everything and I think we have enough laps now that I can be confident when we get on the track.” Thiel stated after the night.

Saturday night at Eldora started off much better for the STM team. Scotty went out for the hot lap/qualifying session and laid down a solid lap time that would put him fourth fastest of the 36 car field. It would place him to start sixth in the four heat race event. The field was pushed out and lined up to take the green flag. On the start, Scotty was able to get a good jump and made a few passes going into turn one. He slid up to the wall and began to make his pace through the field. He ran right against the wall the entire race and moved up to the third spot a few laps later. Coming for the white flag he continued to work the wall and made the pass for position coming out of turn four. He earned himself a second place finish and another locked in spot for the A-main event.

Scotty would be set to start third in the25 lap 360 Kings Royal A-main event. They did a little track work before the main which made for the track to be somewhat tacky for the early portion of the 360 main. The field was pushed off and got lined up and prepared to take the green flag. Coming out of four, the field took the green. Scotty shot down the straight and tried to stick a nose on the bottom of the leader but the door was shut and he fell back into the third spot. He worked the bottom side for the first few laps and fell to fourth. He began to move up the track and held his ground for the first part of the main. A caution came out around the half way marker and Scotty began to notice the temperature of the motor was increasing a little more than usual. The field went back to green and Scotty continued to watch the gauges. A few laps later, the car was to the point that Scotty did not want to push the heat issue and longer and decided to pull off the track rather than risking burning up a motor.

“We had a good night going all night long. That heat race was super fun and really fast. Just wish we could have finished that main. I was not driving the car right early on and then I noticed the heat issue and was getting really concerned about that. We had a good car and probably could have held a top five for sure. It was a good experience though and I can’t wait to come on back to this place. It’s incredible!”

The next stop on the Scott Thiel Motorsports schedule is this coming weekend, July 26th and 27th with the UMSS Sprint Car Series. Friday night is at St. Croix Valley Raceway and Saturday night is at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI.

STM would like to thank all of their great marketing partners for sticking with the team during the 2013 race season and encourage everyone to go out and support these great businesses!
