PETERSEN MEDIA- Matt Covington let one get away Saturday night, and he would be the first to admit it to you. Dominating the early parts of Saturday night’s feature event, the track took rubber, and unfortunately, Covington found it too late, and settled for a third place finish.
“We were awesome in the feature,” he said. “We started on the pole, and were really fast up top, but it took rubber around the bottom, and this was one of those races where it was better to be in second. I wasn’t about to get off the top and go search for rubber. We were too fast.”
Pulling a high pill again in heat race action, Covington showed he had a strong T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters No.95 entry, as he worked his way up to a third place finish, and put himself in the redraw.
Having some luck in the draw, Covington pulled the one pill and sat on the pole, as he looked to garner his second victory of a roller coaster 2013 season.
When the green light’s flashed on, Covington got a very strong jump as he had his right-rear tire planted on the cushion as he simply checked out.
Setting a very torrid pace for the first 12 laps, Covington’s only enemy at that point was the caution flag that flew, putting the field on his rear bumper.
As the laps clicked off, and the race wore down, most of the field ran the bottom of the speedway chasing after him, and rubber began being laid down on.
Committed to the high-side, Covington would fall to the second spot as second running, Kevin Ramey blew past him to take the lead.
Ducking low to get in the rubber, Covington caught back up to Ramey, and tried the high-side to regain the top spot, but the Glenpool, OK driver, touched the wall, and actually broke his air-pressure bleeder.
With air slowly leaking out of his tire, Covington dropped back low into the rubber, and settled for a third place finish.
“We had the car to beat, and unfortunately we got beat,” he said. “We were fast, and I had no idea it would take rubber on the bottom. I have to thank my guys for their work, and really helping us get our program turned around as of late.”
Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2013.
