(Bill W) July 10, 2013 – Making the heat inversion is paramount with the World of Outlaws. In three contests last week, Wayne Johnson found himself on the outside looking in by split seconds at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota and at Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas. This week, the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x will be staying close to home to race in weekly action at the Knoxville Raceway.
After a lengthy delay to run the track in at Huset’s last Wednesday, Wayne found himself 22nd quick, but it was just a small margin from the heat inversion. “We were five hundredths off the heat inversion,” he says. “That’s been where we’re at. We’ve just barely missing the inversion.”
After starting and finishing sixth in his heat, Wayne advanced to finish second in the B main. “I thought we were o.k.,” he says. “We got a good start there in the heat, but with the way the track was, we couldn’t pass anybody. The car was good in the B though.”
On a heavy surface, Wayne would advance a ways in the feature before pulling off. “We made some changes and passed a few cars,” he says. “We were lapped on lap 16 or so. There’s no sense in staying out there at that point. You’re just racing the guys behind you. We’re not racing for points, and there’s no more money in those spots.”
Friday’s feature in Dodge City turned out to be a race of attrition. “We were just a tick off in qualifying again (18th),” says Wayne. “We started 18th in the feature. We got a flat running fourteenth or fifteenth.”
Wayne was scored 17th in Friday’s feature. On Saturday, he was 16th quick, just forty-two thousandths of a second from a heat invert that would have put him up front an in contention for a Dash position. As it was he pulled off and was again scored 17th. “We got a vibration at the end, and the brakes fell off,” he says. “It’s the same problem we’ve been having. Does anyone know how to keep the brakes on this thing?”
The issue with calipers falling off is being investigated this week, as the team plans on getting some laps in at Knoxville on Saturday. “We’re staying here at Knoxville and getting things sorted out,” says Wayne. “We have a lot going on, so it will be good to have a week here at home to do that.”
