SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich.—June 21, 2013 — When talking about legendary tracks in midget racing, one venue rises above the rest — Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis. And rightly so, as the third-mile has hosted midget racing nearly every year since 1936 and is the home of the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame. Taylor Ferns will get to race at the storied facility a couple of times this season with the first of those being this weekend.
Ferns will take to the track on Sunday, June 23 for a full night of racing with the Honda USAC National Midget Series aboard her family-owned No. 55 Motor City Auto Transport Inc. Spike. The event will also be co-sanctioned by the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association.
“It’s pretty amazing to think about all of the history at Sun Prairie (Angell Park Speedway),” said Ferns. “This will be the third straight year I’ve raced up there and I continue to learn more of the little things that it takes to run well there. That can be a very challenging track and there will be a lot of cars on Sunday, so we’ll have to really be on our game.”
Last season, Ferns raced at Angell Park Speedway three times. She was running among the top-10 during the Pepsi Nationals in the fall, before a flat tire forced her to the work area. She would work her way back through the field to finish 12th. The winningest female driver in USAC history also raced at the track with the Honda USAC National Midget Series in July and then in August in a USAC/POWRi/Badger combination event. Ferns finished a career-best seventh at Angell Park in 2011, en route to claiming the USAC D1 Midget title.
Ferns competed in five events last week during Indiana Midget Week with the Honda USAC National Midget Series. She was eighth-fastest in time trials at Lawrenceburg Speedway, which matched her best qualifying effort of the season. The 17-year-old was in a transfer spot in the B-main a couple of nights when bad luck befell her.
“Indiana Midget Week didn’t go how we had hoped,” she said. “We were fast a few of the nights and in a position to make it into the main event and hit a rut one night while in a transfer spot and just didn’t have any luck on our side. The nice thing is we have a race this weekend and can move on from that hopefully turn our luck around.”
Along with competing in the majority of Honda USAC National Midget Series events this season and select USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series races, Ferns is slated to make seven starts in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. She finished ninth, after qualifying fifth in her debut with the series back in March at Mobile International Speedway in Alabama. The Michigan native also raced at Toledo Speedway in Ohio and Elko Speedway in Minnesota, running among the top-10 for a majority of those races, before some mechanical problems led to lengthy pit stops, and finishes of 20th and 12th, respectively.
