At 4:30PM Friday afternoon, the #64 STM sprint car did not have a motor in the car. Shortly after, the team owners pulled into the shop with the motor and the team began to hustle to get the motor in the car and get up to the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway in time to race that evening’s event. The team scrambled and got everything tightened up and loaded up. It is a short 15 minute haul to the track and the team pulled in right as the drivers meeting was taking place. Scotty drew a 42 pill which set him to start on the inside of the last row in the heat race.
Scotty started in the last row of the heat race and had to work traffic well in order to get up front in a quick ten lap heat. At the drop of the green flag, Scotty was able to get a good start but couldn’t make a pass going into turn one. Instead, he set up for coming out of turn two and would go on to make a pass on two cars going down the back stretch. He worked the low line for a few more laps and found himself battling up for the lead at the half way marker. Thiel was able to stick nose in on the leader but was unable to make the pass for the lead and would round of the heat with a second place finish. After the invert was picked, Thiel would go on to start sixth in the night’s 30 lap A-Main event.
The crew prepared the car for the 30 lap main that showed a big cushion all the way around the track. On the initial start of the main, the outside pole sitter broke something which called for a caution and the outside row moving up one spot. That bumped Thiel up to the fourth place position. The field was bunched back up and prepared to come around for the green flag. Coming out of four, the green dropped and the field charged into turns one and two. Scotty used the cushion to move up into the second spot coming down the back stretch right on the tail of the leader. He felt the car out for the first few laps and waited patiently for lap traffic to occur. An early caution would come out and it forced Thiel to start on the inside lane of the double file restart. After returning to green he worked over the bottom groove of turn one and two but shot up to the top side going into three. The leader had started to pull away a little bit but once lap traffic came into play, Thiel worked his way back on his tail. With only ten more laps to go, Scotty got a great run off of turn two and threw a slide job on the leader. To Thiel’s surprise, the lead car still managed to pull through on the top side and it was a drag race down the front stretch. A lap later, Scotty began to notice he was losing some power and looked at his gauges. Heat was beginning to rise and the power lost was getting noticeable. The car began to push in the turns and was getting to be a handful for Thiel. The white flag came out the next lap and Scotty held on for what he could but jumped the cushion in turn three and dropped back one spot. He would go to cross the line in the third position.
“The car was hooked up early on. I was able to get through lap traffic really well. Had a shot at the lead but I don’t know how he managed to pull through on that one. Car was losing power lap by lap after I think the halfway point. I’m not sure what happened but we will take a look at it and try tomorrow” Said a disappointed Thiel after the main event.
The crew noticed Saturday morning that the timing of the motor was off a little and that is a potential as to why it got hot. They changed a few things over as well for Saturday night’s racing event. Their night was short lived in the heat as something broke in the motor several laps in. Mother nature would go on to take the rest of the MSA portion. The crew later determined that the gear on the bottom of the magneto had broken off. They will work on it this week and prepare for next weekend’s racing action that will take place Friday night at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway, Saturday night at the Plymouth Dirt Track, and also a Sunday night special at the Chilton Speedway in Chilton, Wisconsin.
STM would like to thank all of their great marketing partners that make this entire operation happen. They encourage each and every fan to stop by and take a look at these fine businesses!
