Starks Focuses on Dirt Cup, Captures Another Podium at Skagit Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - ALGER, Wash. (June 16, 2013) - Everything has been leading up to this weekend.

Trey Starks' offseason and first 10 races of this year have been in preparation for the 42nd annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup - a $20,000-to-win event at Skagit Speedway this Thursday through Saturday.

"In the past we've raced some big races and you come back home and all of a sudden Dirt Cup is here," he said. "This year we've singled out a certain car and motor package for it. We've geared all of our stuff up for it. We've run Skagit a lot this year."

Starks took advantage of one final tune-up last Saturday at the 3/10-mile track, where he raced in the 360 class. The track also held a few hot-lap sessions for 410 cars to get ready for Dirt Cup.

"Last weekend we were kinda iffy on it," Starks said of his 410 program. "This weekend, every time we went out there we were No. 1 on the board by a couple of tenths. It's looking good for next weekend. We came to win in the 360, but we were focused on getting some good laps in the 410."

Starks excelled every time he hit the track, qualifying second quickest in the 360 class and finishing third in his heat race. That earned him a spot on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap feature.

Starks maintained the runner-up position for the first six laps before falling to fourth place by Lap 9.

"The cushion was really big," he said. "The track was really good. It had a bottom and a top and was slick through the middle.

"I miscalculated on the setup. I told the crew to basically put the 410 setup on the 360. You don't have the power and the weight is different. We were a little tight on the cushion. We just jumped the cushion and fell back to fourth."

When the leader broke on Lap 18, it advanced Starks to third to give him his eighth top-five finish this season.

"It was kind of disappointing," he said. "We were a third-place car, which is good. But you want to feel like you have a car to win. We weren't way off, but we weren't 100 percent on. However, I feel very good about where we are with the 410 stuff heading into Dirt Cup."
