Mechanicsburg - Williams Grove Speedway will host the Van May Tribute Race in honor of the great Texas-transplant Williams Grove competitor this Friday, September 1 at 8 pm.
Presented by Union Quarries, the Van May Tribute will showcase the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 sprint cars in a 25-lap main event paying a hefty $4,069 to win.
Time trials will be used to set the sprint car lineups for the night.
Now age 67, Van May will meet and greet fans in the infield prior to the evening's racing action.
The URC 360 Sprints will join the racing program, contesting a race in honor of late, great URC and Williams Grove champion Kramer Williamson.
The URC Sprints will race in a 25-lap, $2,000 to win main.
Fireworks will also help kickoff the holiday weekend.
Adult general admission is $17 for the racing program with youth ages 13-20 priced at $10.
Kids ages 12 and under are always admitted for free at Williams Grove Speedway!
The Williams Grove portion of the weekly 50/50 drawing will be donated to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.
Van May's career at Williams Grove, honored with the May Tribute Race this week, netted the Texas transplant 15 career sprint car wins, one of which came in one of the most prestigious sprint car races in the nation.
Van May was the 1977 Williams Grove Speedway National Open Champion.
During Kramer Williamson's career, the Palmyra driver put together a total of 21 Williams Grove sprint car victories including one in the National Open as well, in 1978.
Among his other oval feats, Williamson scored twice in URC action, won the 1974 and 1979 season opener and walked away with track titles in 1976 and 1978.
Friday's May Tribute Race will be another race in the 2017 Hoosier Diamond Series for 410 sprints at Williams Grove.
The track will be in action again on Sunday night during the holiday weekend, September 3 at 8 pm, with the annual Billy Kimmel Memorial for 410 sprints along with a K1 RaceGear Summer Series event for 358 sprints.
