(Bill W) June 10, 2013 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team are hoping this is the week that they can finally grab their initial World of Outlaws win. The WoO visits two venues where the Grain Valley, Missouri driver has seen success. Friday it will be the Jackson Speedway in Minnesota, while the storied Knoxville Raceway hosts the series on Saturday. Last weekend, the team suffered a DNF with the WoO Friday at 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa and Saturday they were tenth at Lakeside Speedway near Kansas City.
I’m sure you were disappointed on Friday in Burlington being 24th quick.
We didn’t make the best decisions all weekend really, between hot laps and qualifying. I think we were seventh or eighth quick in hot laps (43 cars) at Burlington. We just didn’t make the best decisions with the car and didn’t get qualified well. That’s so important with the Outlaws.
Still, in the heat, you nearly got to second and a spot in the Dash.
We made some adjustments and we were very good. We were able to go from sixth to third. We were able to challenge Paulie (McMahan) for the second spot and the transfer to the Dash. I just couldn’t quite get him cleared. It was definitely an exciting heat race and it felt good to be one of the few cars passing in the heats.
You started 23rd in the feature and it looked like you were moving up well in the feature.
We had a good run going. I think we were up to tenth or eleventh with seven or eight laps to go. I wasn’t aware of that, but something didn’t feel quite right with the car, so I decided to save it for another day anyway. It wasn’t worth pushing the issue, and we had just been lapped by (Craig) Dollansky. He lapped most of the field, so that wasn’t anything to hang our head about.
At Lakeside on Saturday, you qualified 13th, one spot out of the heat transfer.
If you want to beat these guys, you have to get in the Dash. We were second quick in hot laps at Lakeside. We just didn’t make the right adjustments again. I was the last guy out, but (Daryn) Pittman went out right before us and was second quick, so there are no excuses there. The difference in 12th and 13th is starting on the pole of a heat, or starting where we did, which was fifth.
Again, you advanced from row three to challenge for a Dash spot in the heat.
We had our work cut out for us in the heat, and we were able to get up to third. I kind of chased down Tim Kaeding, and thought we had a shot at second again. We just didn’t get it done. We were fast. We had the fastest time overall in the heats. Unfortunately, that doesn’t pay anything.
Starting in row seven, you finished tenth in the feature.
Two or three laps in, it started laying rubber, so what you saw was what you got. I was pretty disappointed with the weekend really. We had a lot higher hopes then a DNF and a tenth. Sometimes it goes that way. Qualifying has been our strong suit this year, and we’ll be working to dial that in this weekend.
I know you had a special event with FVP at Lakeside.
We had 150 FVP customers and employees. It was so good to get to see them in the hospitality tent and be a part of that. I’m really proud to be associated with a great company like FVP. I wish we could have done a little better for them on the track down there.
The upcoming weekend has to be another one you’ve been anticipating for a while.
We’re really looking forward to getting back to Jackson. We’ve had some success there. More than anything, they have great fans that I don’t get to see a lot. They have supported me from day one, and they are the strongest sprint car fans you’ll see anywhere. Obviously, we’re looking forward to Knoxville too. We’ve been there a couple times since the Outlaws have, so we’ll see if we learned anything.

Brown’s Bits
Brian won the 360 Jackson Spring Nationals on June 1 a year ago. It was his 100th career win and was worth $5,000. Danny Lasoski was second, ahead of Dylan Peterson, Jason Johnson and Justin Henderson.
