Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 22, 2024) – Dominic Scelzi produced a career-best run during the famed Trophy Cup last weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway.

Scelzi’s charge from 22nd to eighth during the finale of the three-day event earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars. More importantly, it placed him second – only three points, which was one position – in the final standings out of the more than 60 drivers.

“At the end of the day with everything we’ve had to overcome this year I can’t been too upset coming up one spot short,” he said. “The competitor in me and a guy who loves the Trophy Cup can’t help but be sick to my stomach. Coming that close to a dream of mine since I was a little kid is hard to swallow, but I’m thankful we had so much speed and were so close.”

Scelzi qualified sixth quickest in his group and placed sixth in a heat race during Thursday’s opener. He advanced from seventh to second place during a B Main to transfer into the back of the main event.

“We qualified well,” he said. “They did a full rework of the track before the heat races and it was super, super wet. The outside row got a little better start and we fell into sixth. We moved through the B Main. Then in the feature it was one lane and hard to pass. I decided to pull off the track early to save the engine knowing that we could have a fresh start on Friday.”

Scelzi was stout on Friday when he timed in seventh quickest in his qualifying group. He followed that up by hustling from fifth to second place in a heat race. Scelzi gained two positions in the main event to finish second.

“We were really good,” he said. “The track was slick and wide when we heat raced and we were able to race around. When we went green in the feature I ripped around the top and that got me to third. I want to say maybe six or seven laps in I was able to slide for second. It laid rubber about halfway through and we managed a second-place result.”

Scelzi was the highest-ranked driver in points following the two preliminary nights. He kicked Saturday’s program off by maneuvering from eighth to fifth place in a heat race. That lined him up 22nd in the 50-lap main event that was inverted.

“It was a good run in the heat race and that kept us in the hunt,” he said. “We battled our butts off all feature long. Our car was really good and we were able to put some good cars behind us early. We were able to continue to pace and able to change lanes really well. All in all, we had a really strong run. We were at (D.J.) Netto’s left rear coming across the finish line for seventh. We did everything in our power and just came up one spot short.”

The second-place result in the final Trophy Cup standings was Scelzi’s best in his career.

He plans to race with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series this Friday at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., and Saturday at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif.
