Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (Oct. 15, 2024) – Jordon Mallett produced a strong weekend at Riverside International Speedway, which hosted the 16th annual Flip Flop 50.
Mallett, who was making his driving debut for A.G. Rains, opened the USCS Series event on Friday by hustling from seventh to win a heat race. That made him the high-points driver and garnered the pole position for the scramble, which Mallett won.
“We had a rough pill draw, but we were really good,” he said. “A.G. had the car good and we were able to charge through the heat race and put ourselves in a good position. We were high points going into the scramble, which was super encouraging only having 10 or 12 laps in that car. We went into the scramble with a few things we wanted to try. We didn’t look at it as a have-to-win situation. It’s another 12 laps to get more comfortable. The car was really good and we were able to go wherever we needed to go.”
The stout night placed Mallett on the pole for the first 25-lap main event on Saturday.
“In hindsight the pole wasn’t the most ideal position as I wished we could have started on the outside,” he said. “We did a good job managing it. We fell to second and then were really good on the green-flag runs. I got to Derek (Hagar) on Lap 17 and passed him a couple of times. The second time we stuck it, but didn’t get to complete a lap before there was a caution. That put us back to second and from then on it was a caution-fest. That was our opportunity and it was just a deal where the cards didn’t fall our way.”
Mallett’s second-place result was his ninth podium outing of the season.
The second feature was inverted, which lined Mallett up on the inside of the seventh row.
“We had a lot of confidence from the first feature,” he said. “We thought we knew what the track was going to do. We wanted to try some stuff to use it as a tune-up for this upcoming weekend. I know the results showed we had a great run, but we wanted to try some things. I felt we hit on some things and we were faster on one end of the track than anybody, but the other end of the track wasn’t the same story. I think we were really good on longer green-flag runs, but we were plagued by cautions. We got to sixth and then the rubber came in. Then we hurt a motor coming to the white flag so we didn’t get to take the checkered flag, but had lapped up to eighth so that’s where we finished.”
Mallett’s eighth-place outing was his 19th top 10 of the season and his 10th in a row.
The team will return to the track this Friday and Saturday for the World Short Track Challenge with the ASCS National Tour and USCS Series.
“I think we have more confidence as we showcased we had a lot of speed right out of the gate,” he said. “The more opportunities we have to refine that will help build more success. We feel we are in a pretty good place and that we can be a contender.”
