(Bill W) June 5, 2013 – Coming off a strong showing at the Mary Lee Standridge Memorial in Jacksonville, Illinois, the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team kicks off a four-race swing with the World of Outlaws tonight at the Kokomo Speedway in Indiana. The WoO will hit the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa Friday, the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas Saturday, and the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska on Sunday.
Wayne struggled with a DNF in the WoO stop at I-96 Speedway near Lake Odessa, Michigan last Saturday. “We just weren’t any good at I-96,” he admits. “There’s not much to say.”
It was on to Jacksonville Sunday. Wayne would tame the ¼-mile, running second after starting sixth in his heat. “The racetrack was pretty slick,” he says. “There was a curb all around it. I saw (Brady) Bacon under me a couple of times, but the top was just faster.”
Starting up front in the Dash, Wayne would checker fourth. “We screwed up in the Dash and just made it too free,” he says. “We just didn’t tighten the car up enough from the heat to the Dash.”
The Knoxville, Iowa resident shot into the lead early on in the main event. “We tightened it up a bunch for the feature and the car was really nice,” says Wayne. “We should have won the thing. We started fourth and took the lead on the first lap.”
A problem that arose a couple weeks back at Knoxville resurfaced. “We were going well and we chucked the inboard caliper off again,” says Wayne. “I ended up running with no brakes on that little bullring! I couldn’t charge the corner, so I got to moving around. I couldn’t run up on the curb, and I couldn’t run the bottom. I was kind of stuck in the middle. Before that, I don’t know that anyone had anything for us.”
Wayne held on for second at the checkers. He is preparing for Kokomo. “We have the thing torn apart and we’ll have it ready for tonight,” he says. “We have new everything…new brakes, new parts, new motor, new everything. We’ll see what that does for us. We’re looking forward to this busy week coming up. We’re getting closer with the car.”
It will be Wayne’s first trip to Kokomo since he first saw it in 2006. He has previously won at 34 Raceway, Lakeside Speedway and I-80 Speedway.
