May 30, 2013 – Memorial Day weekend was supposed to yield a four race weekend for Mark Dobmeier, but Mother Nature interfered and only allowed the Lunstra Motorsports one night of action on the track. That came Monday night at the Huset’s Speedway with the team coming away with a second place finish. The prior week saw the Senske & Son Transfer car parked in victory lane at River Cities Speedway on May 17.

The Memorial Day weekend was suppose to kick off Friday in the hometown of Dobmeier in Grand Forks, ND but a late afternoon shower didn’t allow that to happen. The team made it to the Lunstra shop outside of Sioux Falls on Saturday but didn’t get on the road with the Knoxville Raceway cancelling early that morning. With estimates of three inches of rain Saturday into Sunday around Sioux Falls, Huset’s ended up cancelling Sunday’s show due to wet grounds.

“We just want to get out and race,” Dobmeier said that Sunday night. “The one thing out of all this rain is that the rig is spotless. My guys have done a great job of keeping the rig clean as it continues to rain us out where ever we want to go race.”

But they were finally able to get on the track Monday night at Huset’s due to a great effort by the track crew. With all that rain and very little sunshine, Dobmeier would set the second quickest lap in time trials and found himself starting ninth on the grid in the ‘A’ feature. After catching a few timely cautions, he found himself on leader Terry McCarl’s bumper for a restart with five laps to go. Dobmeier in his Sioux Falls Ford #13 would settle for second in the weekend’s only action.

“The car was fantastic tonight,” he said after the races. “To start ninth and end up second on that heavy of a track shows how great it was. I thought we would have something for Terry on the restart but he got a good jump. My hat’s off to the track prep tonight with all the rain we received here to have that great of a track for us to race on.”

The week prior saw two of the three races get in, and it didn’t come without a little drama. The team was expecting a motor to arrive for the May 17 race in Grand Forks, but it didn’t come during the week. They team ended up having to borrow a 360 motor from the Grinch Motorsports 97G and they ended up winning the race that night after starting in the tenth position. The win was Dobmeier’s 95th career win at the bullring.

“We weren’t that good in the heat race quite frankly and that led us to start where we did,” Dobmeier stated. “We really got going there in the feature and had to really work for it. A big thanks to those guys for allowing us to use their motor so we could get on the track for the opener up here.”

The long drive to Knoxville occurred on May 18 and saw the Big Trucks by Jimco Eagle struggle in qualifying with a disappointing 23rd quick out of the 30 cars in signed in. A nice run to fifth from eighth in the heat locked them in the feature, but saw them starting deep in the pack outside of row nine. A charge into the top ten netted an eighth place finish to salvage the night.

“We just missed it badly in qualifying and that threw us behind the 8-ball all night,” Dobmeier admitted. “We were really good after that, but were stuck starting in the back of pack for the heat and feature. Our qualifying needs to come around for us to get some wins down there with the inversion being an eight all year long. We’ll work on it and hopefully be better our next time down there.

“I am happy that we have a couple of wins this early in the season, but there is room for improvement so we can cash in and continue to get a few more,” Dobmeier said. “This team is capable of winning a ton of races, and Mother Nature just needs to allow us to get out there and try to get those wins.”

This weekend will see the Dobmeier and Lunstra Motorsports crew with their usual schedule: Friday at River Cities, Saturday at Knoxville, and wrapping up the weekend Sunday at Huset’s.
