A Win, Top 3, & Top 5 Memorial Day Weekend for Thiel

A Win, Top 3, & Top 5 Memorial Day Weekend for Thiel

Scotty Thiel and his Scott Thiel Motorsports team hit the road for a six hour haul to the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, WI this past Friday to race the season opener for the UMSS Sprint Car series and the Davey Tabor Memorial event. After taking a win Friday night, a third on Saturday night, they would go to round out the weekend with a Solid top 5 finish with the IRA Sprint Car series on Sunday.

Thiel drew a six pill on Friday night at SCVR which set him on the pole for the heat race event. After numerous cautions flew over the nine lap event, Scotty pulled through and took the checker flag. With the invert for the Challenge race, Scotty would line up 10th. A 12 lap challenge set forth for Scotty but he managed to get through the heavy traffic and prevail to a solid third place finish. The crew prepared for an intense 20 lap A-main event that would have Scotty starting in the fourth position. The field would make a three wide parade lap and get lined back up to take the green flag. Scotty was able to get a great start and launched into the second spot going into turns one and two. The field spread out but a caution would come out and a complete restart was ordered. This time, Scotty bobbled a little and went into turns one in the fourth or fifth place position. However, he managed to get a great run off the cushion in turn two and charged down into turn three and made a pass that would jump him up into the second position. A caution would come out a few laps later for a car stalling in turn three. The field got lined back up and continued the remaining 16 laps. Scotty charged up to the leader and showed a nose two times before settling in and waiting for the right opportunity to make a pass. He was on the leader’s rear bumper for another 12 laps before a caution came out for a car spinning in turn four. A quick four lap dash to the finish would set across the field. Scotty knew that he would have to make a move quick. The field took the green and Scotty ran the low line in turn one and two. He was able to gain some ground and charged to the cushion in three and four. Making a perfect line work up top, Scotty took advantage of the leaders turn four bobble and slide into the lead in turn two. From there, he never looked back and charged for two laps to take the 2nd Annual Davey Tabor Memorial A-Main Win!

“Wow! We had a car that was hooked up tonight. I could put it anywhere and it worked awesome. Things got a little sketchy down in turn one when I jumped a cushion but I managed to keep it under me. I cannot thank my crew enough for all their hard work to make my job extremely easy. Thank you to all my marketing partners for their support! The first win of the 2013 season feels great!” – Scotty mentioned after taking the win Friday night.

The team traveled 45 minutes to the east Saturday night to the Rice Lake Speedway in Rice Lake, WI. Scotty drew an eight pill which again set him on the pole of the heat race event. After a quick nine lap race, Scotty took the win and that would set him to start ninth in the twelve lap challenge race. The crew made some changes to see if it would work later on in the night since the track was extremely dry slick. The field came to the green and it was a scramble to turn one. Scotty worked the high side and made it three wide several times but made a few passes in just the first lap. After getting a solid feel for what the car had to offer, he charged even harder on the top side and soon took over the second position, right behind the leader. With only two laps to go, Scotty tried making the top side work to take over the lead but would fall a little short. That second place finish would allow Thiel to be the high point driver of the night and he would have to draw for the invert. He drew the four pill which meant that he would start in the fourth position for the nights 20 lap A-Main event. The field pushed off and got lined up and would set up for the three wide salute to the fans. After getting lined back up they came out of turn four and took the green. Scotty charged up to the high side and set in the second position right behind the leader, Brooke Tatnell. Tatnell and Thiel charged away from the field and began to hit lap traffic but a caution would come out right before they started lapping cars. The field took the green again, and the two set out from the field again. Scotty worked the high side and waited for the right time to come. Another caution came out with only seven laps remaining. They went back to green flag action and Scotty continued to work the high groove. The third place car would work the inside lane and take over the position of Thiel and also the leader. Tatnell and Thiel charged back forward and Scotty made the move in turn one to take over the lead. Tatnell slid back into the lead in turn four and the top three went three wide coming out of turn four and took the white flag. Scotty went high to keep the momentum going but fell behind the top two cars. He had one last corner left to gain some ground but fell short and would cross the line in the third position.

“The track took rubber later on and we were a little under geared to pull out of it. I messed up on the last lap and went high to keep my speed up but Cody and Brooke got in the rubber and walked away. It was a fun battle for a while there as I had the lead for a little bit. Overall it was a good night for our team. Nothing to complain about with a third place run but it was definitely a good show for these fans” Scotty mentioned after taking a podium finish.

The team drove back south four hours to the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wisconsin on Sunday to race their ascs 360 car against the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints. A strong field of 31 cars took place and Scotty drew a 4 pill which set him to go out second in the qualifying order. After laying down an 11.787 second lap time, Thiel would end up qualifying in the eighth position. That would line him up in the second row outside for the heat race event. Another extremely slick track came into play for Thiel and he knew that all he had to do was run top five to make it into the main. The field took the green and Scotty worked the middle groove in turn one. The cars spread out going down the back stretch and Scotty would settle in the fourth spot completing the first lap. Not much passing took place for the remaining nine laps and Thiel would cross the line in the fourth spot, and earning a locked in spot for the nights 30 lap Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Feature event. With the heat race finish and solid qualifying run, Scotty made it into the redraw and would end up starting in the eighth position. The cars set the track and were given the command for the four wide salute to the fans. They got lined back up and prepared to take the green flag. Coming out of turn four, the green dropped and the field charged into turns one and two. Scotty went to the top side right away and gained some ground on the top cars. After a few laps of settling in, Scotty found himself in the sixth position. A few laps later, Thiel dropped down a few grooves and began to notice rubber coming in to play. He continued to work the middle groove and gained a lot of ground. Soon he was up into the fourth spot but a caution would come out on lap 18. The field got lined back up and took the green flag again. That would only last for half a lap before another caution came out for the third place car getting tangled up in lap traffic. That moved Thiel up one more spot, putting him in the top three. The green flag flew once again and Scotty had to work his way around a lap car in order to get to the top two lead cars. He struggled as he tried to make the pass on the high side but lost his momentum from running in the rubber. Thiel would lose two spots and dropped back into the fifth position. Only a few laps were left and he had no time left to regain his positions and would end up crossing the line in the fifth spot.

“Man, I tell you what. We came here tonight hoping to run possibly in the top ten. We qualified eighth, which I didn’t expect and ran really well in our heat. We made the invert which was pretty cool and started eighth in the main. I drove up to third which I didn’t even realize I was up that far. Felt really good to run that well with these guys, especially with our ascs motor. A top five finish is nothing to complain about at all. Cannot thank my crew enough for all their work this past weekend. It was a memorable weekend forsure!” Scotty expressed after a great night of racing.

Overall it was a great weekend for the entire #64 STM team. They took home their first win of the 2013 season and ran in the top five the rest of the weekend. MSA engine issues force the team to take a weekend off from local racing so they will work hard to get the cars all prepared for the following weekend.
