PETERSEN MEDIA- Matt Covington put an absolute nightmarish start to the 2013 season behind him over the weekend as he scored his first win of the season at Thunderbird Speedway, and backed it up with a fourth place finish at the Devils Bowl Speedway on Saturday.
“It’s been no secret we have had rotten luck and struggled a lot so far this year,” Covington said. “I have to thank Jason Martin a ton for coming on board and helping us out, as well as all of our partners who have stuck with us.”
With his luck turning around in the heat race pill draw on Friday, Covington took advantage and picked up the heat win aboard his T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters entry, and earned a berth in the redraw, which put him on the front row of the feature.
Jumping out to an early lead, Covington was flawless for the first 13 laps on the rough, and tricky track, until he caught a rut, and surrendered the lead.
Heading to the high-side of the speedway, Covington put together a monster run as he looked to take the lead back, but the yellow came out, setting up a green-white-checkered finish, and halting his progress.
In the second spot, the favor was returned as Covington took advantage of the leader hitting a rut, and went on to pick up his first win of the year.
“I couldn’t believe it when we hit the rut and lost the lead,” he said. “It’s how our season has went, but to end up coming back and winning is huge, and I hope it spring boards us to a few more.”
Heading to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, Covington’s pill draw luck returned, as the 70 pill put him in the back of a very tough heat race.
Able to pass two cars, Covington made the transfer to the feature event as he put his Brodix/C.G. Martin Company/Factor 1 Racing machine in the sixth row of the feature event, on the very fast track.
As the green light’s flashed, Covington showed everyone he was very strong, as he went to work fast, as he charged towards the top-five.
By the 15th lap, Covington had found the top five, and on the 20th circuit he took over the fourth spot.
The fourth spot is where the Glenpool, OK driver would ultimately finish, capping off a very needed, and positive weekend for his team.
“I cannot complain at all about the weekend,” he said. “We had a great car, and had two great finishes. Like I said before, I can’t thank everyone enough for sticking with me.”
Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2013.
2013 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-13, Wins-0, Top 5’s-2, Top 10’s-7
ON TAP: Covington has a very busy weekend lined up as he will be in action on Thursday night at the I 80 Speedway in Nebraksa before heading to the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night and the Double X Speedway in Missouri on Sunday night.
