PARKED IT! Jake Martens Charges from 15th; Steals the Final Night of the WheatShocker Nationals

Hays, Kansas 7/13/2024 (www.urssracing.com) - If one word could quickly summarize how this season has been, it would be ‘unpredictable’.

Night two of the WheatShocker Nationals kicked off again on Saturday night, as twenty-two drivers checked into the Rolling Plains Motor Speedway in Hays, Kansas. Once all the nights preliminary action was complete, the field was set for the 25-lap Mel Hambelton Feature race.

The action stopped on the opening lap, after Taylor Velasquez flipped his car in turn 3, temporarily pausing the action. Velasquez was cleared from local EMS and the red flag was quickly lifted.

On the restart, Steven Richardson jumped to the high side of the speedway and started building his momentum, and by turn 4, Richardson was at the front of the pack. With the “O-Show” putting on a show, lap traffic started to fall into the clutches of Richardson.

Going into turn three, Richardson darted his #0 machine to the inside of a lap car, but by the time Richardson could exit turn four, Justin Chaffin’s #22 Sabre Wealth sprint car was tangled up with Richardson.

Back on the restart, Jordan Knight took off with the lead heading into turn one as the laps would start to diminish. Further on back in the pack, Jake Martens, who started 15th, was quickly making moves into the top three. With 6 laps to-go, Martens was on rails with the Jecha Farms #17X.

Selling T-Shirts, Bangin’ the Boards, or rippin’ the lip, however you want to describe it, Jake Martens was putting it on full display for the fans. Martens, lap-after-lap, continued to pester the #10 of Jordan Knight. With 6 to-go, Knight got tight on the bottom of turn 2, and Martens pounced on the moment.

“I feel like all I've done this week is pass cars” Martens said after the race. “Hats off to Josh Jecha our Crew Chief. He said after the heat race he was just gonna put in a full send setup and leave it up to me, and man what a run” Martens added. With his third win if the 2024 season, Jake Martens now sits in 10th for URSS All-Time wins (11 wins).

The series will now head to LaCrosse, Kansas’s Bullring at the Rush County Speedway on Sunday, July 14th for the final night of the URSS Speedweek Tour. Due to the forecasted temperatures, the start time has been pushed back to 7:00 PM.
