PETERSEN MEDIA- In action for a pair of events with the ASCS Lone Star Region, Matt Covington posted a ninth place finish at Sixty Seven Texarkana Speedway on Saturday, one night after contact knocked him out of the race at Timberline.
Saturday night, Covington’s issues with the pill draw continued, as a high pill, put his T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters backed machine in the third row of his heat race.
On what was a fairly narrow track early in the evening, Covington was only able to pass one car, which was not enough to propel him to the feature, and made a quick stop in the ‘B’ Main.
Starting on the front row of the race, Covington was quick to the gas when the green dropped, and picked up the win aboard his Brodix/C.G. Martin Company/Factor 1 backed entry, and earned a spot in the feature event.
Starting 17th in the feature, Covington had a very stout car, as he wasted no time battling his way up inside the top-10 as be battled with Kolt Walker and Jordon Mallett.
Battling inside the top-10, Covington began having steering issues, as his power steering became tough to turn, and the Glenpool, OK driver hung on and escaped with a ninth place finish.
“If we can figure out how to draw a low pill, I think we can pick off a win or two,” Covington said. “We have had a pretty good racecar the last few night’s, but it is either bad luck, or a deep starting spot that makes things tough on us.”
Friday night, Covington and his team were in action at the Timberline Speedway, and it is a night Covington wishes didn’t happen.
“It was just a night filled with bad luck, and being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said. “I think we might have had too much good luck in 2012, and things are evening themselves out this year.”
Starting in the middle of the pack in the feature event, Covington again, showed serious speed as he clawed his way well inside the top-10.
Looking for more, contact ensued, and Covington lost his nose wing, as well as a brake line, but still elected to restart the race from the tail-end of the field.
Restarting the race in the back, Covington nursed his car as he gained spots until just a few laps to go, when the brakes locked up on him, and his car went into a light spin, and he elected to park himself in the infield.
“It was just one of those night’s that frustrates you, but you look back on it and know what kind of car you had, and build on it.”
