Inside Line Promotions - BELLS, Texas (May 6, 2013) - For only 15 races into his career, John Binz has put together a nice résumé.
A dozen races into his first full season in his micro sprint, Binz has recorded four top-five finishes - including two this past weekend. Binz tied a career best with a third-place finish on Friday at Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas, before wrapping up the weekend in fifth at Grayson County Speedway.
"It was a good weekend," he said. "I'm still learning and improving each race, so it's great to see good results during the process. One of these days soon I'll get that first victory."
In non-wing action on Friday at Kennedale Speedway Park, Binz had to overcome issues early in the night. With twin heat races, where the first race is lined up by a random draw and the second is inverted, Binz started the first race on the outside of the front row.
"The guy on the pole and I got together and banged wheels coming off turn four on the start," Binz said. "Our wheels kinda locked together and I spun around."
That forced him to restart at the back and after another collision midway through the heat race, Binz pulled into the pits thinking he had damaged the chain. He finished fifth and then maneuvered from third to second in the final heat race, giving him the seventh starting position for the feature.
"It was real slick in the heat races and they reworked the track for the feature," Binz said. "I got up to fifth pretty quick and kinda rode around there."
Binz picked up two more positions, including the pass for the final spot on the podium in the closing laps. It was his third time finishing in third place.
On Saturday Binz competed with the wing at Grayson County Speedway for the first time and he drew the pole for the lone heat race.
"I got the lead on the start, but we were just too loose," he said. "I just had no drive off the corner."
After finishing third, Binz lined up sixth for the 20-lap main event.
"In the feature we tightened it up a bunch," he said. "We just tried something different on a real slick track. It was right around the tires; you couldn't really pass. It wasn't very exciting."
Binz gained one position to end the weekend with another top five.
He is set to compete at Mountain Creek Speedway in Grand Prairie, Texas, on Friday.
