Dodge City, Kansas (www.racedcrp.com) - Only one word can quickly summarize the 2024 Steve King Memorial… REMARKABLE!
The American Sprint Car Series stormed into Dodge City Raceway Park Saturday night for the running of the Steve King Memorial. With seventy-eight race teams ready to go in the pit area, the spectators and crews were ready for an action packed night of racing.
The evening would start off strong with hot lap sessions, followed by two-car qualifying with the American Sprint Car Series. As Mother Nature started to close in on the track, a new track record was broken with the ASCS, seeing Sam Hafertepe Jr. lay down a 13.444 lap time, beating Jason Martins 14.341 from a year ago. Following the conclusion of the ASCS qualifying, track and series officials then made the call to place the evening in a weather hold as lighting and light showers surrounded Dodge City.
Around Nine O’Clock local time, the pending rain showers had already dropped moisture onto the track, leaving drivers, officials, crews and spectators all scratching their heads and asking the same question. “Will we get to race”?
After another 20 minute hold, the weather and lightning concern quickly moved off to the southeast, and SportMod drivers were getting the call to hit the track to help pack the surface. Nearly a hour and a half weather delay, and the ? mile track was primed yet again for racing action.
Going into the feature races, the IMCA Northern Sport Mods took to the track, setting the stage for a 20 lap main event. The green flag would drop and so did the patience of the field. Jimmy Brozek would make a daring move going into turn one for the race lead, but Kent Lampe hung onto the top spot for the opening lap. It only took three laps before Jimmy Brozeck was hunting down Kent Lampe for the top spot. Lampe would enter high into turn one, leaving the bottom groove open for Brozek.
Steven Swarthout, who started back in the ninth position, methodically made his way through the field. Lap after lap, Swarthout would run quicker lap times and continue to pick off the positions. Meanwhile, Brendan Nordyke would take the lead from Jimmy Brozek with eight laps to go. Brozek would go back to the inside and grab the lead back from Nordyke. With only one lap to go, the caution would come out for a car in turn two. Brozek and Nordyke would get a good restart, but Steven Swarthout, who restarted third, had all the momentum on the high side. Swarthout would get a run around Brozek and grab the checkered flag.
In the IMCA Hobby Stock feature, Cody Williams from Minneapolis Kansas grabbed his 16th win out of 32 races run this season.
Williams, who started from the pole, had no pressure all night as he wired the field from flag to flag.
Another race that went flag-to-flag was the IMCA Southern Sport Mod division. Making a return to Dodge City Raceway Park for the division, Robert Elliot from Clinton Oklahoma wasted no time finding victory lane in the queen of cow towns.
The next scheduled event at Dodge City Raceway Park will be June 6th with the Nitro Monster Truck Series Malik a return to Dodge City.
