PETERSEN MEDIA- Though the scorer’s sheet shows him with a ninth place finish in Lawton, OK, Matt Covington was the show on Saturday night, but contact with a lapped car on the last lap ruininng the Glenpool, OK driver’s night and he ended up with a ninth place finish.
Lining up in the sixth row for the feature event, Matt Covington committed himself to the high-side and it worked for him, as he was the class of the field during the third round of Sooner Regional competition.
On a very fast track, Covington wasted no time moving his T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters machine towards the front as he was quickly battling the likes of Mike Goodman, Danny Wood, and Jake Martens.
In thick traffic, Covington continued to run the top, as he got up to the lead, but as the top began to slow down, he was unable to make his pass for the lead stick, and he settled into second, as he and Danny Wood battled.
On the final lap while running in the third spot, Covington looked to make something happen, and went back to the top to get around a lapped car, but as he did, the slower car drifted up the track, and knock Covington off the track, but he kept his foot in it, did a 360, and crossed the stripe in the ninth spot.
“If we had any luck, we would have a couple of wins right now, but unfortunately it has been a rough start to the year,” he said. “Jason Martin has been helping us out, and he is helping out a ton, and really has us going in the right direction.”
To start the night, Covington drew a high pill, and put him in the back of his heat on a very locked down surface, but a fourth place finish was enough to put him in the feature event.
Matt and his Covington Racing team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2013.
